About

The Lodge at Leathem Smith is a wedding venue located in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. In 2011, owner Paul Meehan purchased the waterfront property to provide the Door County community a place to gather for special occasions. Situated on a peninsula, this venue provides a backdrop of Lake Michigan for your celebration regardless of the season.

Facilities and Capacity

The Lodge at Leathem Smith offers flexible spaces for both indoor and outdoor events. The main ballroom features a wide mahogany bar, a red-carpeted stage, and a dance floor. You and your guests can dine under unique lighting fixtures made out of ship wheels and cream-colored drapery that complement the nautical marina setting. Adjacent to this space is a catering area with high-vaulted, wood-beam ceilings for a seamless dining service. Large glass doors at the back of the ballroom connect to the patio where guests can enjoy hors d'oeuvres and cocktails in the open air. For outdoor receptions, there are tented options available. Depending on your desired layout, a marquee can be set up on the venue’s lawn, adorned with warm lighting and nature-inspired decor. A dance floor and stage may also be installed so that you and your guests can dance the night away to live music while sipping beverages from the outdoor tiki bar.

To create a memorable, personalized experience their wedding team will guide you through the planning process. Paul and the staff at the Lodge did not disappoint. He followed through on everything he promised he would do. He was open with communication, we talked about expectations so when it was all said and done there was no surprises. The venue is beautiful and they cleaned the grounds the day before and made the place look great. Food stations were amazing, everyone complimented how tasty it was. No one was hungry after the meal.

It was fantastic working with Paul and Holly. They made everything so easy and as near worry-free as wedding planning can be. Each time we visit Door County we will definitely be visiting!

The Lodge of Leathem Smith did a fine job the day of our rehearsal dinner, wedding ceremony & reception. The food was wonderful and the servers did a great job. The location was quite perfect for our celebrations and we enjoyed having our guests right onsite. The only thing that would have made the experience better would have been for the Lodge of Leathem Smith to have a designated Events Planner. They need somebody to handle all the arrangements, contracts, questions, confirmation of how the details will occur, executing the details on the day of so guests don’t have to be frantically getting everything done within 2 hours of the wedding, making sure billed amounts are accurate, etc. This would have helped with the hiccups we had along the way.

Paul and Holly are very nice but they don't explain things to the best so it's easy to understand the break down of cost. Their food is amazing but the food we had at the tasting was very different than we had at our wedding. Still good but because of lack of communication things were different than expected. The head chef is amazing. The bartender we had was great. The wait staff on the other hand was very rude and disrespectful and some of them were very unprofessional dressed for being at a wedding. They were very egger to clear the tables when there was still things when that the guest and the bride and groom still wanted but they just threw it away without any communication. The hotel rooms are very clean and welcoming. They are very strict on their check in times which interfered with our wedding guest and our wedding schedule. Made it very frustrating for our guest who stayed. I hope that everyone who has their wedding there doesn't have the experience that we had. We had a very exact budget that we wanted to spend and they nearly doubled it.

Don't Waste Your Money!

My husband and I recently got married in September and held our reception. When we did our tour it exceeded our expectations, along with the taste testing of the food. Paul is a great guy and very polite. However, we struggled a lot trying to get ahold of him. We set a hotel block that was going to end on July 1st. I had requested that we push it back until the end of July because we didn't want to send out our invites early and get an inaccurate head count. Paul agreed to pushed back the room block, but never told the front desk to update it. Even before July 1st, we had multiple family members calling trying to book a room and they said that they didn't have any rooms left... then 1 hour later a different family member called to book a room and was able to book a room?! Their front desk lady said they had rooms and that they didn't have rooms. It was very frustrating trying to deal with all of this while planning our wedding. Yet when I called, they said that there were still plenty of rooms available. Not to mention, they messed up my mother in laws room and ended up giving her our room for Saturday night!! In the end it ended up working out better for us because we got the house for Friday and Saturday night. Setting up went very smoothly, Milan did a fantastic job while we were setting up and all night Saturday always checking in on us and seeing if we need anything. When it came time to eat, the food that was served to us wasn't what we sampled during our taste test. The mac n cheese was supposed to be a four beer cheese mac n cheese and it tasted more like an over cooked Kraft mac n cheese. The sauce that we had ordered for our panko crusted chicken wasn't even what we sampled at the trial.. a lot of our guest got confused on the sauce for the chicken thinking it was some sort of gravy. The servers told them that it was gravy, not sauce for the chicken. As for the broasted chicken, we got terrible remarks regarding that... we were told that the chicken was dry and had a terrible plastic smell with an off taste. Our immediate family all didn't even get a piece of chicken, they asked the servers 3 times to get refills on food. Instead, they were ignored and they tried clearing their plates, someone said how they still didn't get more food and the server brought 3 pieces of chicken...only 3 for a 8 top table! Just ridiculous. We obviously would have said something to Milan regarding the food on Sunday morning, however no one told us until days after the wedding. We were hoping it was just our food that tasted off. We are extremely embarrassed for the food that was served to the guests at our wedding. We never would have food like that served if we would have known how it was going to taste. Overall, we are disappointed with how the food tasted, it wasn't even close to how it was at the trial. The whole day was perfect and we will always remember the comments on the food when we look back to that day. The bartender also tried cutting off my husband from drinking because she thought he was going to be going on the dance floor. There were a few drinks spilt on the dance floor, however the floor was already sticky when we got there! Days after our wedding I emailed Leathem Smith just letting them know what we have been hearing and how we were dissatisfied, we had asked if there was anything that they could do for us since we didn't think the food served was worth $22 a plate. We didn't get any email back... not even an apology. It's not like my husband and I to write bad reviews like this, however the amount of money that we spent there and the amount of embarrassment that we feel we thought it is necessary.
We have heard mixed reviews about weddings here and we thought since our taste test went good that we were in the clear... It's 2022, having a wedding reception shouldn't be a hit or miss if the food will be good or not. We will not recommend this place to anyone.

Owner threatens to “fuc*ing bury me” after complaint about dirty room

Owner threatens to “fuc*ing bury me” after complaint about dirty rooms

My complaint about a dirty room resulted in the owner calling me and threatening to “fuc*ing bury me” if I dared to post anything negative. So let it be known I am not feeling suicidal if anything happens to me after I post this review.

My wife, 3 year old daughter, 4 month son and dog stayed for a family reunion. Our first room was so dirty it smelled like a pack of wet dogs and if you walked barefoot on the floor your feet turned black. We checked in early and hoped the smell would go away. By the time we closed the windows and put the kids to bed the smell was not gone. So I went to the desk to inform them of the issue. They offered solutions that included moving my family in the middle of the night and finally settled on a can of Lysol spray and a candle as the only solution until the next day when a new room was ready. They moved us to a new room in the morning.

When I checked out I simply asked if they would be willing to offer any discount on the first night. The GM, who had given me the Lysol, said no because we should have requested a new room sooner so it was our fault, not theirs. I then asked to speak to the owner and they gave me a card. The card had a number that called the front desk, not the owner. The staff was clearly trying to avoid me speaking to the owner. I told the front desk that I would expect a call from the owner as soon as possible or I would contact local business networks and the authorities.

A few days later the owner called me back and proceeded to scream at me for 20 min with a profanity laced tirade that was not grounded in fact.

All I wanted was some acknowledgment that my room was not up to standards, I didn’t demand a refund or anything of the sort.

Instead I got screamed at with profanity.

If you go here and things are not up to par then beware the standard is the customer is wrong and they want you to deal with it based on their arbitrary timeline or you will end up getting yelled at and threatened with violence.
We're all about trust. Our community relies on honest reviews to help you make those big decisions with ease.
