About

Preservation Hall is located in the French Quarter, just three blocks from the Mississippi River. The Hall has served many functions over the years. Originally built as a private residence in 1750, the hall has evolved into a tavern, inn, photo studio and an art gallery. The inside of the hall contains portraits of the musicians who first filled it with the beautiful sounds of New Orleans Jazz.

Preservation Hall opened its doors in 1961. The hall was created as a sanctuary, to protect and honor New Orleans Jazz which had lost much of its popularity to modern jazz and rock n roll. Allan and Sandra Jaffe, the hall’s founders, wanted a place where New Orleans musicians could play New Orleans Jazz, a style, they believed, should not disappear.

Today, over 50 years later, the hall is still going strong. On any given night, the hall is filled to capacity with people eager to hear New Orleans jazz played by veteran musicians in their 70’s and 80’s and younger musicians learning and embracing one of the World's most unique musical legacies.

When we decided to hold our wedding weekend in New Orleans, we knew we wanted to give our guests an authentic New Orleans experience. Preservation Hall was the first venue we toured, and it made quite an impression. It has a beautiful courtyard in the back, a rustic carriageway, and the Hall itself is steeped in history and tradition. Debbie Guidry, the events coordinator, was extremely helpful and responsive. As part of the package to rent out the Hall, she organized the band (Tornado Brass Band, who were phenomenal), table and linen rentals, a Second Line Parade (but it rained so we didn't have it), a tent for the courtyard, booked a gospel choir for the ceremony, and coordinated with the caterer for set up and deliveries. She also aided us in setting up our DIY guest book, dessert table, menus and flowers. We had to move the ceremony to the Hall due to rain, and Debbie was able to coordinate with us to make that happen (and the ceremony in the Hall was MAGIC.) She was fabulous. The Hall is not a large venue. We had about 120 guests, and since we had to use a tent, it was the perfect amount. Table seating is not an option but the food was served as buffet, our guests loved it and we had a fantastic time. I wouldn't change a thing about our choice. The guests are still talking about it. And our photographer said it was the coolest wedding venue he had photographed. Many thanks to Debbie and the Preservation Hall staff for helping to make our wedding an amazing event.
