MY STORY
I remember as a child growing up in rural Jamaica all the hustle and bustle in our tiny kitchen which served many home cooked meals in our school principal’s cottage. In those days, having a cake mixer was a novelty so almost everything was done manually preparing all the baked treats as the holidays approached.
Baked treats, especially Easter Bun still remain very vivid in my mind. I can still sense the smell of yeast at Easter as my Mom would put the yeast filled dough on the verandah to rise each Easter.
In High School I volunteered each Sunday to prepare the dessert accompaniment to Sunday dinner. This was usually one of several recipes from my Mom’s favorite cookbook, which migrated with me to NY. Some of my favorites included chocolate fudge, grater cake, and one egg cake and sugar cookies.
After my Mom’s passing in 1987 I found myself more and more inclined to bake. It was my therapy especially when I migrated to NY and helped me get through homesickness blues as I adjusted to life away from home.
In October 2000 I decorated my youngest daughter Morgan’s birthday cake together with my dear sister Cheryl and thoroughly enjoyed it. Shortly after I enrolled in Wilton’s cake decorating level I with my friend Josie. After completing level one I was able to make my oldest daughter Kristen’s first Barbie doll cake. I subsequently completed Wilton’s levels 2 & 3 in Spring 2001. Thanks to my co-workers who were subject to consuming my weekly decorated cakes that were the output of each class. They must have enjoyed it as I have been asked time and time again to bring in a cake for our very many office celebrations.
In December 2000 I asked my sister-in-law for her Christmas cake recipe, which was a known favorite in our family circle. Together with my first mixer bought by my husband as a Christmas gift I baked my first fruit cake in December 2000 and put my own personal spin on it and have been baking and shipping fruit cakes all over the world since then. It first started with one of my Mom’s former students Minnel calling with a list of family members and addresses and asking that I send cakes to them as a gift.
Prior to December 2007 my cakes have traveled as far south as Brazil and as far north as Sweden. This Christmas my cakes will be traveling to the “land down under” to a co-worker who has heard rave reviews from other co-workers about my baked treats. You never know where else you may find a baked treat from JMPARTYCAKES as the word travels.
I am currently enrolled in Baking and Pastry Arts Diploma program and will graduate in Spring 2021.
Since our inception, our business has expanded and our portfolio now includes catering (American and Jamaica cuisine), custom celebration cakes, cupcakes, cookies, fruit arrangements and photography.
