About Concentus String Quartet

We are a string quartet based in Louisville, Kentucky. Founded in 2006 by Travis Carlisle and Matthew Lane. Travis and Matthew grew up playing music in various orchestral and chamber groups together. After both went away to separate colleges, they reconvened and decided to form a new group, which became the Concentus String Quartet. Below is some information about our members:

Travis Carlisle is a cellist and founded the Concentus String Quartet in 2006 with fellow member and longtime friend Matthew Lane. Mr. Carlisle started playing cello at age 9. He was a member of the Louisville Youth Orchestra for 7 years, and member of the top Symphony orchestra for 5 of those years. Mr. Carlisle studied with Paul York, and participated at the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts. In addition, he was selected to participate in the Kentucky All State Orchestra in all 4 years of eligibility.

Mr. Carlisle received his Bachelor of Science in Business from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business with a Minor in Music. After returning from school, Mr. Carlisle and Mr. Lane founded the Concentus String Quartet in 2006. Since then, the quartet has been featured 3 times on WUOL 90.5 FM Lunchtime Classics. Mr. Carlisle currently is employed as the Vice President of Administration for the Murphy Elevator Company. He participates in the Louisville Civic Orchestra (formerly the Jewish Community Center Orchestra), and is a freelance cellist who has played a broad variety of groups including The Baptist Seminary Orchestra, CenterStage, The As Yet Unnamed Theater Company, Christ Church United Methodist, and many more.

Matthew Lane is a violinist, teacher, performer, music minister, and apprentice violin maker. Mr. Lane founded the Concentus String Quartet with longtime friend and cellist Travis Carlisle in 2006. A Louisville native and 2002 graduate of Manual High School/Y.P. A.S., Mr. Lane earned a B.A. from Centre College in 2006 where he twice won the Concerto Competition and participated in a diverse spectrum of musical groups; everything from Chamber Ensembles and Orchestras to the Centre Klezmer Band.

He is currently pursuing an M.A. from the University of Louisville. He otherwise might be found restoring violins with Mark Edwards, directing the Oldham County Strings Project, teaching private lessons, leading choir rehearsals at Audubon Baptist Church, or rehearsing with his friends in the Concentus String Quartet. Mr. Lane serves as violin instructor at La Grange Elementary, Buckner Elementary, Harmony Elementary, and the St. Patrick School. As a student, he benefited from the loving and patient instruction of many wonderful musicians and is an enthusiastic alumnus of the LYO repertory and symphony orchestras. It is with great excitement that he begins his first season with the LYO Presto Strings at Lincoln Elementary.

Elise Kotheimer Gambrell started her musical training on the violin when she was three years old and began training on the piano at the age of seven. She participated as a member of the Louisville Youth Orchestra for five years, where she served as concert mistress of the Repertory Orchestra and assistant concert mistress of the Symphony Orchestra. Mrs. Gambrell won the McDowell Music Teacher's Competition in 2001, and the McCauley Chamber Music Competition in 1999. She has studied under the guidance of accomplished teachers including Peter McHugh, Patrick Rafferty, Cheri Kelley and Hiroko Driver.

Mrs. Gambrell received her Bachelor of Music degree in violin and her Masters of Arts in Teaching Music from the University of Louisville. She taught at the Boaz Performance Studio from 2002 - 2006, where she instructed students between the ages of five and sixteen. Mrs. Gambrell became a certified Suzuki teacher in 2001 and has taught privately for nine years.

Currently, Mrs. Gambrell is the Orchestra Director at New Albany High School and Hazelwood Middle School. She also serves as the director of the Serenade Orchestra through the Louisville Youth Orchestra.

Michael Hill is a violist and native of Cleveland, Ohio. He studied with John Largess; he continued his education with Masao Kawasaki and Dr. Catharine Carroll, earning a Bachelor of Music at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music. Moving to Louisville, Mr. Hill completed a Master of Music at the University of Louisville's School of Music with Dr. Chien-Ju Liao and Dr. Yen-Ting Wu. He was a member of the Graduate String Quartet and also served as principal viola and teaching assistant to the viola studio throughout the program.

Mr. Hill has performed as an orchestral and chamber musician at the Aspen Musical Festival and School and as principal violist with the Opera Theatre and Music Festival of Lucca, Italy. He collaborates on chamber music performances in the Louisville area as well as with the Heaven Gallery Recital Series in Chicago, IL. Local performances have included work with Bourbon Baroque and the Choral Arts Society as well as new music for Hear + Now at 21c and the Actors Theatre Late Seating. He has also performed with several orchestras in Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia.

Mr. Hill is a member of the Concentus String Quartet, working regularly in educational and performance settings. Also Suzuki certified, Mr. Hill teaches several private studios -including the IU Southeast Arts Institute and the Community Music Program at the University of Louisville - while collaborating on performances ranging from early music to new works. He has conducted sectionals and master classes for college and pre-college students in Louisville and surrounding areas. Mr. Hill has conducted sectionals for youth orchestras in southern Indiana and Louisville. He has performed and recorded with local composers, performers, and professors. In performing and teaching Mr. seeks to share music with others through education and efforts making classical music more accessible to the public.

Concentus String Quartet was absolutely amazing! We got multiple compliments on the music during our ceremony, and they played songs per our request that were not on their list (some of our favorite Christian/worship hymns). They were extremely professional and easy to work with. I highly recommend Concentus String Quartet!!!
