I found Bates catering for my wedding going to the Portland bridal show. I requested a quote and was very happy with the rate, so we booked them and put our deposit down. I'm extremely disappointed and will NEVER recommend them. The reason for 2 stars is the food did taste amazing but however the experience was less than I ever expected. in my mind, food is one big factor in a wedding and it can get spendy. Before them, I was getting quotes for $13K-15k. So, when I was originally quoted around $4K I was happy. Here is what they didn't do,,,,,I think that for a "catering company" you should automatically include the prices FOR PLATES ETC. It wasn't until about a few months after we originally booked them and were talking about plateware when they tell me "well that wasn't included in your quote:...are you kidding me??? what did you expect my guests to eat off??? SO I ask to include that. Asked later as well, since we provided the beer and wine, if they were the one to be able to pour.....response...well, we will charge you to provide someone to pour...but then again if we didn't go with their beer/wine then we'd pay more...soooo had to spend an extra $100/hour just for them to pour and also had to sign a waiver that if anyone else brought they're own then we'd be charged.
Later down the road, about a month or two before my big day, I mentioned something about silverware....apparently I didn't ask for it prior and so again, got charged again to ADD IT IN!!! Again....was I supposed to tell my guests to BYOsilverware?? ON THE DAY OF MY WEDDING AS WE WERE SITTING DOWN TO EAT come to find out my father had to run to the store and purchase WATER CUPS!!!! When it came time to cut cake, I come to find that they didn't provide those either....I had guests scrambling to wash plates in the kitchen so evening got one!!!!! Mortifying.
I should have gone with one of the other caterers and paid more, cause in the end, I ended up spending close to that.
