Stephanie and I began oure relationship through facebook, which is how we first started talking. I wished her a happy birthday on March 21st and she returned the favor on the 23rd. I noticed she was going to an Eric Church concert, one of our favorite country singers..and thats really where it all began. We started talking on a regular basis, exchanging messages and eventually phone numbers. After weeks of getting to know each other in which some of those nightly talks lasted well into the early morning hours, I gathered the courage to drive from Ft. Benning, Georgia back to Kansas for the weekend on a pass. I was stationed there for my basic officer training with the Army at the Army's Infantry School. I had talked to Stephanie about it and we were both excited to go out to dinner and have our first date. I literally drove a thousand miles in 13 hours to see this girl! I know Stephanie was excited as I was, and I was extremely nervous! I arrived at my parents house in Lansing, KS on Friday night. I had our date planned out, we were going to Fogo de Chao, an awesome Brazilian steakhouse where the food is die for. Afterwards, we would drive to a friends house and go fishing in the dark. During the day I had spent hours preparing. I went to Cabelas and bought an extra pole and outfitted it. I went and bought head lamps for when it gets dark and glow in the dark bobbers. I was ready to roll! Stephanie had spent the day at work and started getting ready for our very first date together! I gathered everything in my car, and headed off. Driving to her house, I was so nervous and anxious to meet her. When I pulled up, Stephanie came walking out of her front door in a stunning white dress, with her long blonde hair down to her shoulders, truly love at first site. I had never seen a woman so gorgeous. She was stunning. Immediately I became nervous, I knew I had to be on my best behaviour so I wouldnt mess things up. I knew right then and there that this was going somewhere. We talked on the ride out to the restaurant, and I admit I was becoming shy. I was just shocked that I had the most beautiful woman in the world I had ever seen in my car, next to me! We talked about our days and listened to some music on the way there. When we got there I explained how the etiquette at Fogo de Chao was done and we had a great time! We ate the food which was amazing, and we drank some excellent wine, which loosened me up and I could tell that Stephanie knew I was shy in the beginning. But the wine worked and soon we were laughing and we enjoyed our first date.
After dinner, we got in the car and drove back to my parents house where we both changed in to our fishing gear! I had everything packed up and ready to go and soon we were on our way! Stephanie was so excited and so was I. But, I greatly underestimated Stephanie's fishing abilities. We arrived at my friends house and we walked out there with our gear. I had the poles ready to go, the worms to get the fish, the alchohol to enjoy, and an amazing woman to fish with! We got out to the pond and got into the paddle boat and soon we were fishing. Little did I know that Stephanie should compete in fishing tournaments, she was reeling in fish faster than I could put the worm on my hook! It seemed like everytime she cast out into the water, that bobber went under and she was reeling in fish. We enjoyed some beers and had a lot of laughs. It was past dark and we decided to head back to shore. The score ended up being Stephanie 5 to my single, itty...bitty...fish. To admit I was a little embarrassed, I had truly met my match. How in the world could this girl be dominating me in one of my favorite past times? Well, in case you didnt know, Stephanie is more than what meets the eye. As we wrapped everything up, I had an ace up my sleeve to top of a great first date. It was a clear May night, the stars were out and we were in the country. so I led her over to a little hill near the pond and we sat there looking up at the clear nights sky. Enjoying the stars and talking about our night and a few other things. I pulled something out of my back pocket, a poem I wrote for her and I read it out loud for her to read.
" Driving back here, looking ahead always
Petal to the floor, driving through a maze
I couldn’t wait to make that glance
Taking a chance
Thinking of all the laughs and smiles
To think, I just drove a 1000 miles
To see you, and make that cast
For this all nighter, man I drove so fast
To see that laugh, and the smiles behind it
SBGAHA, damn that’s legit
That twinkle in those eyes
Late night calls, how time flies
There are some things that I work for
And I’m setting my sights on more
Getting through the days now seems rough
But this rugged warrior man is tough
Waiting patiently for that next message or that ringtone
I love hearing your voice through my phone
I went through so many things to say
But in the end I’ll be wishing for one more day
Always worried how u feel or what you think
Caught up in this moment, takes me to the brink
I look forward to any interaction with you
Drinking Smirnoff and beer, seems like the right thing to do
I got my pole, and my sbgaha by my side
Waiting for this moment for that whole ride
I hope things keep going the way they are
My vesper, in other words, my star
There are so many things I like about your awesomeness
So I’ll list a few, and no blushing my Kansas princess
The way my stomach turns into knots, even now
Out of nowhere you came, and I really don’t know how
Your laugh, is music to me
I always try to make you do, so now you see
You’re personality and everything that is you is great
Telling you about you, I can no longer wait
You’re stunning and you drop my jaw every day
Blondes are better, and there’s nothing more to say
Green eyes that make butterflies fly
To make this the best weekend ever, I’m gonna try
It started with Eric Church and flowers at the work place
My eyes, cant look away from that pretty smile, and cute face
I don’t care if I catch a single fish or a minute of sleep
The memories this weekend, I’ll forever keep.
You see, I’m a warrior man and I’ll train with all my might
But I have one more reason, for why I fight
For the heart of a princess, to be mine
So lets do this and see what we find
In the darkest places anywhere in the world
I’d gladly go, to be yours to hold
So let me see that little hand
And take it into mine, and here we’ll stand
My strengths into your weaknesses, and yours into mine
A sweeter moment, I couldn’t find.
So lets cast our poles and start this night
Cuz this isn’t wrong, and I’m damn right.
I know what I want and I’ll work hard for it
I wont take a fall and I’ll just roll with any hit
I wont give up and walk away
I wanted to get this all out, all I have to say
But words don’t describe how I feel tonight
I’m finally happy, because right now you’re by my side
I hope you’ve had as much a good time as me
So far this has turned out so perfectly
I’m into you and you got whatever Zac Brown said
So many thoughts have been in my head
But I want that next step, and I’ll wait if I have to
Because all I think about is you"
After I read that, I asked Stephanie to be my girlfriend. She loved the date, the loved the fishing, she loved the poem, and she loved our first date. She gave me her hand and said yes, and that wasnt the first time she would say yes either. Our first date was the start of something amazing, something raw, something new. And slowly through the following months we grew closer, and we grew as a couple. Our emotions and feelings for each other grew each day, and turned into love. Our love grew deeper, providing a basis for our relationship. It's a feeling like nothing in this world, and we both wouldnt trade it for the world. Now we've promised ourselves to each other for the rest of our lives on June 17th,2011. I hope you enjoy our story...because to us its the greatest love story there is, its ours.
