Plastic plates that look like china. Should I have them at my wedding? Picture attached.

Emma, on February 16, 2014 at 12:57 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 23

Hello

My wedding will be outdoors inside a tent. My wedding color is gold with ivory. I want to know if you like the plates that I got for my table setting. I still need the salad and cake plate. This is just a sample of the colors. But the plates are not real china though. They are hard plastic that almost looks china. My wedding will not be at a venue, so I have to provide plates and everything because its at a house we are using. We have to also provide with the catering and servers. The good thing is that we won't have to deal with washing dishes if they are hard plastic. If we rent china, we will have to wash all of them at the end because we have to return them. And that's a lot of work, Are these plates good? Do you think my guests will consider it too cheap? I really want my wedding to be elegant. My ideal table setting is like the table at the second picture. The colors that I chose almost match I believe.

The second picture looks like just chargers. You could maybe add some to your place setting just to make it look a little fancier. Your plates don't look plastic from the picture but chargers would be an easy way to spice it up a little. They're like $1 each and you could always resell them.

No they look fine. Great idea. Also before someone yells at you make sure to change your avatar so its not just the generic rings

I'm using the same China lookalikes. It's budget friendly for sure, and I honestly don't think that any of my guests will care as long as they're not eating on Styrofoam plates, lol. I think doing what's best for you and your budget is the best advice I've ever been given, so I'm passing that along to you. :-)

Ok, I need to know where to get these!! We're having my wedding in a park, and it's just me, my fiance`, my 8 children, their signifcant other and any children they have. So it's very "homey" only in a garden woodland setting. I don't need to worry about looking cheap.... it family, lol. But I too didn't want to have to bring in MY own plates. And I worried too about renting, and then cleaning before returning. However, UI didn't want Dixie or Chinette at my wedding, either... so these are *perfect*!!

I agree with Ashley. As a guest, if I knew the theme was elegant, I would not expect to see plastic plates.

The second pic of the table does look really elegant, and I think plastic would look odd, IMO.

Depends on the hardness and weight of the plastic. But they look great! @OP & @TheFutureMrsWade, I am getting my gold charger plates from smartyhadaparty.com! It's awesome! However, if you do not want to purchase them through a website, Michaels and Pier 1 sell beautiful chargers too!

Those plastic plates look like something from SmartyHadAParty. I got my plastic plates there - but I chose a different style.

I'm using them, but my wedding isn't elegant - it's fun and casual, daytime, at a beach.

Although I agree that plastic plates aren't elegant, the charger plates do help!

My DD had plastic plates at their wedding, and you could barely tell that they were plastic until you touched them. I say GO FOR IT...it makes you a smart bride!

We are having plastic and even *gasp* heavier paper for the hors'douvres and sweets tables. I got upscale packs of heavy paper plates with GRAPES (vineyard wedding) and flora on them, that were originally $8.99 a pack of 8, for 50 cents each!

Here is another one with really great prices on plastics. I use the "silver" plastic ware at work, and every single day I have people ask me for disposables, because these look SO real, they have to touch them before realizing that they ARE the disposables. I have also cut everything from salads to meats with them, and never a break!

We're going plastic, and BJs(big-box store) usually has really good realistic-looking "china" and "silverware"

ETA: Kat, thank for for that site! I had been looking for biodegradable options, and this has great prices!

I like your plates. I think the patterns, colors, and shapes of china-like dinnerware pieces are great. The thought of a bride (or her family members) collecting, counting, washing, and restacking dishes at the end of her reception runs counter to the romance and magic of the day. If using these plates makes the clean-up quicker, go for it. From a guest's perspective, it's what on the plate that matters, not what's under the food.

Truthfully, as a guest, the only place that I'd wonder about the use of china-like dinnerware would be at an elegant, indoor venue. At park weddings, beach weddings, garden weddings, home weddings, and tented weddings, they wouldn't bother me at all.

We are using the white plates but with the silver rim for our reception, it's in a lodge type wood building and we are seeing bbq. We didn't want to have to worry about cleaning off rental plates at the end either!

I looked at webstaurantstore.com, but found out local GFS store to be cheaper. They sell a box set with service for 8 for $10, plus I get $5 off a $50 purchase all of the time. The set includes the salad and dinner plate, and silver plastic fork, spoon and knife for each person. Works out to $1.15/person!

I appreciate all the feedback. I might end up buying the plates. I really don't mind renting china, but just the tought of all the cleanup makes me doubt. We are supposed to enjoy the party, not stress out over cleaning plates.

At our Publix supermarket, I found heavy plastic flatware that looks like silver. Just used it for DH's b'day party and it looked and worked fine.

Good decision, Emma. You're going to be a bride on June 7, not a table buser. It'll be beautiful.

If your wedding is a casual vibe...I think it's fine. It's outdoors in a tent so I think it will be fine. I personally wouldn't care. Just happy I'm being fed. Lol
