Getting married without a maid of honor!

I am having a destination wedding. I chose a maid of honor but she will not be able to attend. So I would prefer not to pick anyone else. I've never known of a wedding to have no maid of honor. Have anyone attending a wedding without one?

    We are not having any attendants at all, we have figured out that the officiant will hold our rings... but I am not sure what to do with my flowers if I have no one to hand them off to any ideas?

    For those of you who just had bridesmaid, did you just call them that? or Did anyone use "best girl" or something else? And how did you ask them? thanks for the help!
