Beautiful Makeup

Carl was gifted to me for my wedding day makeup and I couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. We did a makeup trial a few months before my wedding and I was able to get an idea of what I wanted for the day of my wedding. We made some tweaks and Carl listened to all of my requests. My makeup looked natural but also had me glowing and it lasted all day and all night! Carl was professional, arrived on time, and finished all four girls in the bridal party--myself included--on schedule. I would recommend Carl to any bride-to-be!

Carl is simply the best!

Carl made me feel beautiful on my wedding day. My makeup was absolutely perfect - natural yet everything was enhanced in the best way possible. I felt so beautiful and loved that I didn't look too done up or like I had stage makeup on! Also it was comfortable - I was worried that the eyelashes would bother me, but I didn't even feel them. I also loved that I didn't need to touch it all day - it wore fabulously and I was so distracted I forgot to reapply lipstick - but it wasn't even needed! The wedding party also looked their best - everyone said how young my Mom looked! and the girls had a blast getting all glammed up! Thank you Carl!

Felt like a celebrity!

I searched endlessly for a makeup artist for my wedding for myself and my bridesmaids and knew I struck gold when I stumbled upon Carl. His work speaks for itself, but I took so much pleasure in seeing all of my girls be genuinely excited about how they looked! His calming presence is exactly what a bride wants the morning of a wedding. I felt super glam and will absolutely hire him again for events. Considering Carl's clientele, I thought his prices were very reasonable. Such a treat, and worth every penny.

Carl ray is everything!

I had heard about Carl from a friend. She told me he was *THE* makeup artist to work with in the DC area, but I had no idea if he would be available or within our budget. Our wedding planners reached out and not only was Carl available, he could totally work with our budget + needs. He did makeup for me, my mom and my sister in law (MOH) on my wedding day and we were all SO HAPPY. I LOVED my makeup and am so happy when I look at all my photos. I have very sensitive skin and eyes, but I told Carl and he said there's nothing he can't handle. He was right! I've worked with many makeup artists for my job, but Carl is by far the best. Professional. Creative. Fast. And FUN! Thank you Carl! You made my wedding makeup dreams come true!

Carl Ray is the only way to go!

Carl is an absolute magician when it comes to makeup. He knows exactly how to apply makeup so that your natural features are highlighted without looking unrecognizable which is exactly what I wanted for my wedding day. I pride myself on being pretty good at doing my own makeup and I still cannot get myself to look as good as I did when carl did my makeup for my rehearsal dinner and wedding. He is such a joy to work with as well and was a great presence to have around the wedding suite on the day of. He made my bridesmaids + MOB + MOG look so good. I really wanted my wedding party to look like we belonged on the cover of vogue instead of a wedding magazine and he delivered. Everyone looked amazing and Carl listened to what everyone wanted. If you don't book Carl Ray, then what are you doing??

Absolutely Incredible!

Not only was Carl extremely professional, responsive and incredible at his job he as is also such a delightful person that integrated himself so well into such a special weekend with me and my closest loved ones. Carl did our makeup for three events throughout our wedding weekend and each look was distinct and specially curated in tandem with my hair stylist and taking into consideration my outfits and "vibe" I was going for. Man did he deliver! Each look was absolutely flawless, leaving me, my mom and my girls speechless looking like movie stars and feeling so beautiful. Not only was I so impressed with his work on the day of, leading up to the wedding he was extremely responsive via email and took the time to work with me on selecting lipstick colors/brand and sharing photos of looks to work off of. For the wedding day, I told him that I just wanted to look like the best version of myself and that is exactly how I looked and felt. All of my bridesmaids looked fresh faced and beautiful, with each of their makeup perfectly tailored to their individual looks. I couldn't recommend Carl more. I hope in the future I have more milestone and special events I can hire him for, I truly have never felt so beautiful inside and out.

Carl was absolutely amazing to work with. He was the best of the best because he was flexible and responsive to my needs as a bride living internationally. Absolute wedding makeup perfection

Carl Ray flew all the way down to Tampa to do the makeup for myself, my maids of honor and our two mothers at my wedding. His work was absolute perfection -- I will never get over how incredible my makeup looked on my big day, both in person and in the photos. He takes his time and is a total perfectionist, listening to what you want and making sure that you look like yourself, just the very best version of yourself. He is also a truly kind and enjoyable human to have around all day, which is just icing on the cake. The price he charges is also really quite reasonable given the insane level of his talent and level of service he provides. Could not recommend him more.

Carl Ray is a phenomenally talented artist whom I am sincerely fortunate enough to have had grace my life. One year after completing surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation for breast cancer, in addition to facial surgery for skin cancer, Mr. Ray transformed me into the beautiful bride of my dreams. This precise and exacting gentleman expertly tailored his products to my skin’s needs and personality. The trial run ensured he familiarized himself and his craft with my location, expectations and desired result prior to the big day. The consummate professional, he confirmed appointments, answered texts or e-mails promptly, arrived on time, left my house cleaner than when he arrived, and took every CDC recommended Covid precaution, and then some. Carl is also exceptionally kind and gracious. He generously took the time to touch up my 85 year old Mother’s make-up as well as that of my two sisters. His affable demeanor was a pleasure to be around, and somehow even managed to keep my Dad’s nerves in check. Carl Ray is that rare total package – insanely talented, yet without the arrogance. Carl Ray is top notch - look no further, ladies! When Covid made wedding planning difficult, the one element of my wedding I knew I could count on was my makeup. Carl Ray was so sweet and lovely and made me look and feel prettier than I ever have felt before. I still looked like myself, but like Vogue cover worthy! Also have to say that my makeup held up perfectly despite countless mask on/mask off moves, and my lashes even lasted overnight with my sleep mask! Felt like a Princess

Carl was amazing to work with. I showed him a picture of the look I wanted and he knocked it out of the park. My now husband, isn’t big on a lot of face makeup, so wanted to be glam, but subtle. Besides me, my poor mom who’s 81, fell in the mall the week before my wedding and broke her nose and some ribs and was hospitalized. We sent Carl some pictures a few days before of what he was going to have to work with and let me tell you ... she didn’t take her makeup off for 2 days after the wedding because you couldn’t see a single bruise from her broken nose. I mean, it was a bad fall!! She cried everyday up to the big day saying she wasn’t going to take pictures because she looked so ugly. Man, couldn’t tell a thing. For that I’m even more grateful. I’m no spring chicken and she waited so long for this day and he made her look beautiful. I would highly recommend Carl and get him on the books early !!! I’m using him again for next years post Covid, round two, fingers crossed!

Carl was wonderful! I’m so glad I hired him for my wedding day makeup. With COVID we have had many changes with the date and where we are getting married and decreasing the number in the bridal party and Carl was so flexible and understanding. Could not ask for better!

There are not enough words to describe how amazing Carl is at what he does. He did my makeup for my COVID-19 micro-wedding and it could not have turned out more perfectly. I’ve had my makeup done by other professionals but Carl blew them all out of the water. He asked questions to understand my day-to-day makeup routine and then made me look (and feel) like the best possible version of myself. His personality made the day so much fun and the whole experience was unbelievably relaxing. Working with him was an absolute blast and made an already special day even more special. Magical Touch

Carl performed makeup services for myself and five of my bridesmaids. If you're like me, you've pored over local wedding blogs and social media, and know that Carl is a big deal in the industry. In person though, he's amazingly down-to-earth, humble, and a good conversationalist for the hour plus you spend together while he's applying makeup.

In terms of the experience, magic may sound exaggerated, but it's really not. I'm stationed overseas in a country with lots of pollution and spent seven months of my thirteenth month engagement wedding planning overseas. That, plus the stress of moving to a new environment and starting a new job = a wrecked complexion. Coming back to DC a mere week before the wedding, I was gravely worried the blemishes and imperfections of my face would be immortalized forever on photos and video. A facial right when I landed helped; Carl did the rest. Though there was enough makeup to smooth out my complexion, my look still appeared natural and not over-done. When I brought amateur photos of the wedding back overseas to my colleagues, they all remarked that I looked both beautiful as well as "myself". A really high compliment, I think. If you want to see for yourself, my before/after is on his IG where he used my example as a primer for "smooth out skin tone with makeup" (thanks for being gentle!).

Lastly, for brides and wedding parties with people of color - Carl is absolutely your person. My wedding party had Asian and African-American complexions and he had the perfect shades for all our colors.

Wedding makeup

Magic touch!

Carl is fabulous at what he does. I think people skimp out the most on make-up because the cost of a wedding can really add up and brides think they can fix it up themselves (big mistake!), but in all honesty, you get what you pay for - and Carl is worth every single penny.

Carl requires you to do a bridal trial which is really nice because then on the day of the wedding everything runs seamlessly. Carl did my bridal make-up as well as 5 other people in my wedding party and everyone looked amazing. He is so calm and easy to work with - he fit right in with the crowd and even put a little eyeshadow on my niece and flower girl who was watching him with adoration (so sweet, it made her day !)

I don't wear a lot of make-up, so natural glam was really what I was looking for and he hit the nail right on the head. I was so happy to have him on my wedding weekend and I couldn't recommend him more - he has the magic touch !

Carly Ray is professional, experienced and has an eye for beauty. He was worth every penny and made me look and feel exceptional on my wedding day. It was great that I had done the bridal trial with him several months in advance so we could perfect my look on the big day. He made the bridal party look their best as well. I highly recommend him and his services - he truly is the best in the business.

Carl is the best- you can not find anyone better! He is so fun to be around and he will make you feel your best on your wedding day. Not only did he make me feel amazing, all of my bridesmaids were in love with their makeup and were raving about it all night long. My makeup stayed in place throughout the ceremony and reception, even when I had a couple of tears at the altar. There is no better than Carl and he will make you feel like a dream as you walk down the aisle!

Carl is the best of the best when it comes to makeup! I am so glad (and lucky) he was available to help me get ready on my wedding day- and I have never felt so beautiful! From the trial to the Big Day he made the entire experience so exciting and so easy. Carl took his time with everyone, and brought out our best features (everyone was glowing). I have nothing but kind words for Carl Ray. I had be traveling for a few months leading up to my wedding on Sept. 2, 2017 in Washington, D.C. and I did not have time for a make up or hair trial. I had read so many great reviews about Carl that I didn't hesitate to book him when I saw that he had an opening on my wedding day. I didn't even have any direction for him - just that I wanted to be beautiful for my wedding day. I don't often wear make up but I felt so incredible after Carl worked his magic. I would find it hard to believe that there's anyone better than Carl in DC.

I LOVE CARL. I love his assistant Natalie too : ) he is THE BEST in town. I live in NYC and had trials with many for my bridal makeup and he continues to outshine the rest. I asked Carl to do my makeup for my wedding and he did an amazing job! The makeup looked perfect and lasted all day long, even during a (sweaty) afternoon photo session outside in the sun. I cried while dancing with my father and the makeup stayed exactly how he left it.

Carl has a very calm and relaxed personality, which is exactly what you will want on your wedding day. He made me feel so comfortable while applying the makeup that I told Carl I could practically fall asleep. He was also really accommodating during the consultation when picking out the style I wanted. I cannot recommend Carl enough, he is fantastic.

Carl did such an amazing job with my makeup for my wedding. I'm the type that typically does not wear makeup and usually freaks out every time I've had a makeup artist do any kind of work on my face. Carl was incredible, he knew exactly what would work for me and made the makeup look natural and pretty. It's always amazing to watch someone who's clearly so good at what they do and it was reassuring to know that I was in good hands. Carl is truly an artist and my makeup looked great the entire day even with some rainy spells. I would recommend Carl Ray in a heartbeat. He is the sweetest person to work with, incredibly patient, and so talented.

I cannot imagine a better makeup artist than Carl! I must confess that I was nervous before meeting him -- I thought to myself (perhaps a bit crazily), "He has done Michelle Obama's makeup, and I am a nobody, so why would he care about me and my makeup?" But as soon as I met him, I was put at ease -- he is such a kind and warm person, and my face and my wedding seemed to be all that mattered to him both during my trial and on my wedding day. It was such a pleasure to spend those ~2 hours with him; he is lovely to talk to. And his makeup is perfection. I don't wear makeup often, and when I do, I prefer a lighter touch. I was able to communicate that to Carl, and although I am sure that he used a lot of makeup on me, it didn't seem that way -- it seemed light and natural and in no way over-the-top. Yet I felt more beautiful than I have ever felt in my life. (And I know that for those who prefer a heavier touch and more dramatic makeup, Carl is completely capable of that as well, and those results are also stunning.) He is so talented and he has such a gift. He is a dream makeup artist for any bride, and I can't recommend him highly enough!

In short, Carl Ray is the BEST makeup artist a bride could dream of. In addition to being incredibly talented, Carl listens to his bride/clients, asks all the right questions about the big day (colors, lighting, settings, etc.) in order to help you achieve the exact look you want. Additionally, Carl is an incredibly calming person. With his incredible portfolio, I expected him to be very intimidating but it was the complete opposite. I was pretty anxious on the morning of my wedding and as soon as he was there, I relaxed. His prices may be higher than others in the market but he is worth every penny. The only drawback is that he is in high demand, so book early. When I tried to book him 10 months before my wedding, he was booked but I called back a couple of times and he wound up having a cancellation. I am looking forward to my next fancy event so I can hire him to do my makeup again!

As soon as I had a wedding date with our church, I booked with Carl - before I had a venue, a florist, a planner, anything else!!! I had my trial on my birthday and it was perfect - exactly what I envisioned and wanted. It turned out that my wedding was actually on his birthday and he still came to my hotel. My best friend and I looked absolutely gorgeous. If you love the art of makeup, he is a must-have for your big day.

I found out about Carl through Instagram (@carlraymua) and his work speaks for itself! There is no one else in DC who I would trust with my face on the biggest day of my life.

Working with him was a true delight and I can't wait to treat myself to a visit to see him at the salon for future special occasions. Love him!!!

I was lucky enough to work with Carl Ray for my wedding in May of 2016. What a gem this man is!

From his portfolio and my trial session, I knew I could trust him implicitly; but he also was a fantastic listener and made sure we were aligned on my desired look for the day.

He truly is masterful and always makes his clients look like their best selves. His energy and demeanor are so wonderful. He is calm and warm—and even had me smiling and laughing during in the chair as he got me and my mom ready on the big day.

If you're stressing about making sure you still look like yourself (but better than you've ever looked) for your big day, Carl Ray is your guy. I only wish he could do my makeup for every special occasion!

I was so lucky that Carl had availability for my wedding day!!! I had read his glowing reviews and was so excited that he could fit me in despite his other bookings. Carl is unbelievably talented! I generally don't wear make-up -- at most a few dabs of concealer and a touch of lipstick. Since I have never had my make-up done professionally I was a little anxious about the whole process and worried about an unnatural look. I was so pleased -- stunned actually --by the results!!!! (Eye grocery bags disappeared!!! Cheekbones, where have you been all my life?!!!)

Carl basically turns you into the Disney Princess version of yourself! He does make-up in a way that truly accentuates natural beauty. When you look in the mirror, you will see your best-self looking back! The look Carl created for me was so gentle, soft, pretty and romantic. I received so many compliments on my make-up, and it looked just stunning in photos.

I strongly recommend a make-up trial first -- doing so will ensure your comfort with the process and the final look. Also, don't worry if the make-up feels or looks a little heavy right after Carl applies it; it will settle onto your skin after 30 minutes to an hour and then your skin will just glow! Finally, if you are a private person (like me) and don't want your name/photos posted anywhere, Carl and the salon will totally respect your wishes! You will not regret working with Carl! Have fun!

Carl Ray did my makeup for my wedding in May 2016. He was my first choice for MUA and I was so happy he had the availability!! He was wonderful. We did a trial before the big day and he was so responsive and on board with my request to have more of a glow and bronzed smokey eye with lots of lashes. He was such a pleasure to be around, so nice and friendly and funny. On the day of he was prompt and really put me at ease. He is such a true talent. He made me feel beautiful and confident on my wedding day and he was an absolute joy to be around. He did my mother's makeup as well (and being a very particular/picky person) she raved about how great he made her look and feel. I can't recommend Carl Ray enough. I must say I spend a lot of time and energy doing my own makeup and am usually VERY hesitant to let someone else touch my face because I know what works for me and what doesn't. I had no issues trusting that Carl Ray would make me look amazing and he delivered- he knew exactly what I wanted and how to execute it. He's a gem!

Carl Ray and his team are godsent!! Carl's work is perfection. I received SO many compliments on the entire bridal party's makeup. We could not have been happier. Don't hesitate in booking- just do it! After we nailed down the date of our wedding and photographer, my next email out was to Carl Ray. I read previous reviews and saw his before/afters and knew I had to have him on my special day. Shortly after emailing him, I quickly received a response back and he was available for my September 20th wedding. Given Carl's talented range in makeup- from the runway, magazines to PLOTUS, I knew that he had an eye for what looks good on certain faces and how it will photograph. Carl was on-time the day of my wedding, professional, easy going, and humble. He is definitely easy to get along with, has a calming aura and knows how to maximize each 'palette' he is given. My wedding makeup was exactly how I wanted it and really liked the colors- the makeup also lasted ALL day with no real touch ups. My bridesmaids and mother also LOVED the way he did their makeup.. I would definitely book Carl Ray to do my makeup for any occasion- photoshoots and major life events, or just because ;-)

Carl did my makeup for my wedding and he did an amazing job. I opted to do a wedding trial at the salon. I showed him a few pics of the look I was going for on my wedding day. We discussed exactly what I wanted and what he recommended. He went to work and we chatted the whole time. Once he was done, I was stunned at the results. It was exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately, Snowzilla forced us to cancel most of our wedding festivities, but we moved our wedding up a day and tried to cobble together what we could. Carl and Salon One80 were so accommodating and moved my appointment without any issues. I had been crying and not sleeping for the better part of the week trying to deal with the cancellation of our initial wedding plan. I was completely stressed out and looked just terrible by the time I arrived in Carl's chair. Not exactly how you want to look on your wedding day. He was so kind to me as I explained the situation and started to cry a bit. Carl refocused me on the excitement that was ahead and told me to relax as he went to work. When I opened my eyes and looked in the mirror, I was astounded. You would never have known I had been sobbing my eyes out earlier and I looked 100% natural- not caked with makeup. He sent me on my way with hugs and well wishes. Let me tell you, my husband and I laughed and we cried at our wedding as did our parents and a few friends. However, my make up was flawless from 3pm until 1am. I was sad to wash it off. I would go to Carl again in a heartbeat for a special occasion. He works some serious magic!

I LOVED my face on my wedding day ... and it's all thanks to Carl Ray! He is an extremely talented makeup artist, who is fun to be around. No wonder he's the First Lady's go-to man! After meeting him during a trial, I knew I wanted him by my side on my wedding morning. He arrived at the hotel on time, and got started right away! He's meticulous and truly enjoys his work. Carl is a true gem! I cannot possibly say enough positive things about him. He's a creative genius and made me feel flawless on my wedding day! Carl is professional, punctual, and such a pleasure to work with - his incredible demeanor helped to make me feel so relaxed and at ease. He is so accommodating, and scheduled trials for not only me but also my mom and mother-in-law before the wedding so everyone felt comfortable with their desired look. Carl was able to highlight my natural features and make my skin look radiant for the photos! His makeup feels so light and natural, I almost forgot I even had fake lashes on. Not to mention, on the wedding day, we started with makeup at 11am and through the entire day and whole reception, by the time we got back to our room at 4am, my makeup hadn't smudged a bit! Carl Ray did makeup for my mom, my mother-in-law, my bridesmaids and myself. We had two ceremonies, a Hindu ceremony and a Christian ceremony, so we spent two days in a row with him. It could not have been a better experience. Everyone looked like the very best version of themselves - and it showed in how they carried themselves. He also was very good about taking into account individual preferences in the work that he did. Of course, the makeup he did for the Hindu wedding was flawless, and was a very different look from the makeup for the Christian ceremony. He also made the experience fun. He made everyone laugh and enjoy the experience, which was a wonderful way to start two such important days. In addition, he gave me two lipsticks from his personal line that I am so happy to have and use regularly. Carl Ray is the best and I would highly recommend him to any bride who wants to look her absolute best on her wedding day!

I cannot say enough about how amazing my makeup was for my wedding!!! Carl did my makeup for my wedding day on 8/31/14 and he made me look and feel like the most beautiful version of myself! I have had my makeup done by others in the past and feel like I am a different person under layers of makeup, but with Carl, everything truly was PERFECT! And to add to that, my makeup didn’t budge all day (it was an extremely HOT and HUMID August day in DC, but my face didn’t give that away one bit). When I initially reached out to book Carl, I worked directly with Rick Raines, and he was so accommodating and helpful through the process as well. And just to make things better, Carl was so down to earth, easy to talk to and such a joy to work with! If you want to look stunning on your wedding day, no question, you need to book Carl!

Carl is amazing. He did such a wonderful job on my makeup, my matron of honor's, and my mother's. We got so many compliments throughout the night, and the makeup looked perfect until the end of the evening. It's such a treat to have your makeup done by the best in DC for your big day!

Carl is the absolute best makeup artist I have every worked with!
He makes you feel so comfortable, and really listens to everything you say. I can be VERY picky about my makeup, but he took the time to make sure I was 100% happy. At my trial, I changed my mind a few times, but he was so patient and caring-he truly wants you to be happy with his work!!
I absolutely loved my wedding day look!

Carl did an amazing job on my makeup! He was able to make me look my absolute best, without being too overdone. I felt like the best version of myself, and could not have been more pleased with the results. He also did a perfect job on my mother's and sister's makeup, with the three of us preferring different styles. We were running late the day of, but he was able to graciously accommodate the tight schedule and still do an amazing job. I am very grateful to Carl for helping me look and feel my best on my wedding day!

Carl made me look absolutely gorgeous on my wedding day. He hit the sweet spot of making me look elegant AND sexy!! I loved everything about my makeup, my skin was glowing, my eyebrows looked great, and my eyes looked smoky without one smudge. AND most importantly my make up stayed on all night…it looked just as good in pictures at midnight as it did at 4 pm.
From the moment I booked Carl and spoke with his assistant Rick I knew I was going to be taken care of, and I was.
Want to also mention that his pricing was comparable to many of the other make up artists I looked at. A++++++

When I first heard about Carl, I was immediately attracted to his high profile reputation. I love makeup and wanted the best for me and my bridesmaids on my wedding day. Upon hiring Carl, he came to my apartment for my makeup trial which we scheduled the same day as our engagement photos. There was no doubt in my mind that he would do a beautiful job - let's face it - the First Lady uses him and she has exquisite taste. What did surprise me, however, was how down to Earth and funny Carl was. I had the best time getting my makeup done that day and on my wedding day, Carl made me feel like a princess. He doesn't just know makeup; he's an artist. Furthermore, he is
professional, savvy and an entrepreneur - check out his line of lip glosses! Carl's assistant, Rick, who handled all of the scheduling, was also q pleasure to work with. Carl Ray did an amazing job on my makeup for my wedding. I was completely blown away. It was worth every penny. And I'm someone who doesn't wear a lot of makeup and I'm very picky. You know it's worth it when you look at yourself and think, "Wow, I look damn good!" I got compliments all night long, even after dancing up a bit of a sweat. If you are thinking about getting professional makeup, look no further. Carl will make you look gorgeous! Plus, he is so easy going. He will put you at ease on the big day. Also of note, Carl has incredibly high profile clients, who look amazing all day long thanks to him.

Let me begin this review by saying that Carl was the third person I called after I got engaged. This was not because I couldn't wait to tell him but because I wanted to book him for the entire month of April until I could lock down my venue. Basically, I was not getting married without Carl and Rick on my team. Fortunately we were able to get everything organized quickly and I did not have to book for the entire month! Carl is truly an amazing artist and a fabulous person to boot. I didn't even bother with a trial as I knew whatever he wanted to do the day of the wedding I was going to love (and I did)! Rick is scheduler extraordinaire! He made the entire process seamless. I must have changed the schedule 10 times before the wedding and he was responsive, relaxed and very accommodating. I can't recommend Carl Ray Makeup Artist, LLC enough. You will be thrilled you choose them.

I just cannot rave enough about Carl and Rick. Rick was so helpful coordinating schedules between various cancellations from snowstorms and sicknesses and then when I finally met Carl, I was thrilled. He did the make-up for myself and my sister on March 8, 2014 and was even nice enough to put some color on my 8 year old niece. I was nervous to meet him, but he's so caring and genuine that he immediately puts you at ease. And his skill is unmatched. I've had professional make-up done dozens of times, and nobody even comes close to Carl. He's a true artist and a true professional and really, what more can you ask for? If he's free, book him. You won't regret it.

Carl Ray did my makeup for my winter wedding, and exceeded my expectations. I was skeptical of using a professional makeup artist, because of skin and eye sensitivity, and also because I wanted a natural look for my wedding day. When I went for my makeup trial, Carl asked lots of questions and I was happy with the look. Fast forward to my wedding day, and some of the small tweaks he made (without me even asking) took the look from great to absolutely perfect. He did everything possible to avoid irritation to my sensitive eyes, which was a small miracle. Carl's personality put me at ease, and I left the salon feeling confident and relaxed. When the pictures came back, you could barely tell I was wearing makeup. I just looked like a glowing, flawless version of myself. Which was exactly what I asked for. I'm grateful to Carl for being part of my "glam squad" and would highly recommend him to any other bride in DC.

Carl Ray is THE BEST. I can go on and on about how a great a make up artist he is, and he is. He is the best. He made me feel and look beautiful for my engagement pictures and on my wedding day. He is the busiest man I know, but he took his time with me on my wedding day and then asked me to come back after I finished my hair for some touch ups. And he also gifted me my new favorite lip gloss which was clutch. So anyway, not only is he amazing at what he does, but he is also SO SO fun and puts you in the best mood. And who doesn't need such an amazing presence on their wedding day when you're surrounded by crazy?!! He's amazing. I am by far not his biggest client (make up artist to the DC stars here ladies) but he 100% makes you feel like you are. I wish I could see him once a week! Also, his person Rick makes it ALL happen. He's just a sweet and wonderful to work with and he literally fits it all in -- working with the brides crazy schedules and Carl Ray's. They are THE BEST and you CANNOT get married in DC without going to Carl Ray.

If you are lucky enough to have Carl Ray for your wedding then by all means do so! He was the first vendor I booked after my venue, and boy am I glad I did as his schedule fills up quickly and he is worth every last penny. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Carl and about Rick, the salon manager, who coordinates with you closely on scheduling in the months leading up to the wedding and is completely vested in making sure you love how your makeup and hair look before you head out the door.

On the day of my wedding, I truly felt like the most beautiful, natural version of myself after Carl had finished my makeup, which is exactly how you want to feel on your wedding day! Carl does amazing work for all ages and did the makeup for my mom as well, who is in her 60s and had never had her makeup done professionally before so she was nervous it might be too heavy, but he had such a natural, expert touch and was so kind and sweet to her, that she looked truly radiant—we were both so thrilled with the results. Our makeup was done around 11 am and looked flawless all day, even at midnight as the night was drawing to a close. I can’t imagine going with anybody else, and we are absolutely looking forward to working with Carl for future important events!

Carl Ray is absolutely amazing, and a must for your wedding day makeup!!! As soon as I got engaged I contacted him. I was initially worried because my wedding was in Baltimore, MD, on January 19th, 2013 (the day before the election), and knew he would be extremely busy with inaugural events. But he was absolutely accommodating, and his manager, Rick Raines reassured me that Carl would definitely be there!
From the start, both Carl & Rick were so professional, responsive, and very friendly. My makeup trial run was fabulous. With a brief description of the details of the wedding and the overall look I was going for, he gave me the PERFECT look. Carl is extremely talented; I had no doubts at all about the wedding.
And on the wedding day, Carl came to our hotel in Baltimore, and did makeup for myself and my mom. Wow! We’ve never looked, or felt, so beautiful! Fresh and natural-looking, yet dramatic at the same time – gorgeous in photos! My husband absolutely loved it. (And his makeup didn’t smudge at all the entire night.)

I highly recommend Carl Ray for your wedding day (or other special event)! I’m so thankful he was a part of mine. His talent and creativity are unmatched.

I went to Carl Ray to have my makeup done for my June 2013 wedding. My coordinator actually suggested that I go to him and I must say it was one of the best decisions I made for my day. He was such a pleasure to work with and he's such a down to earth guy. Not only is he amazing at what he does, but he takes his time and makes you his number one priority when you sit in his chair. I gave him examples of the look I was going for and he totally exceeded my expectations! Not to mention my makeup looked just as good by the end of the night as it did when I first left his chair. I would highly recommend Carl Ray to anyone who is looking to have their makeup done!

Carl did an amazing job on my make up. He is so sweet and down to earth you would never know he was a make up artist for such HUGE names. I booked him 7 months in advance-- when booking vendors make sure he is the first on your list, you won't regret it! I called a month before and had to change the address of where Carl would be doing my make up and it wasn't a problem at all. He was on time and even mentioned how much he enjoyed the beautiful drive, which was probably about 45 mins/hour from where he works. I can't wait to see the professional pictures ;-) Thank you again Carl and Rick!

I had an amazing experience with Carl for my wedding! I have worked with many, many makeup artists, and Carl's attention to detail and artistry is what separates him from the rest. Carl is very professional, talented, and a true joy to be around -- definitely worth every pretty penny.
Carl made me look natural, but definitely the best version of me, which was exactly what I asked for. During our "first look," my [to be] husband was delighted when he saw how natural, yet exquisite my makeup was. Carl is a true artist!
My mother also had her makeup done by Carl, and she was delighted with the result. Carl shed years off my mom's life, and she looked the best I have ever seen her look. My dad is a very tough critic, as he hates when my mom and I get our makeup done professionally because it is usually too heavy. However, he was pleasantly surprised when he saw Carl's work and thought we have both never looked so beautiful.
Additionally, Rick was extremely helpful and unbelievable to work with (as always!), and made the logistics on the wedding day go more smoothly than I ever thought possible. He was very accommodating and I really appreciate his hard work and attention to detail. What an amazing duo!

There is no one in the world that I would have called before Carl Ray. He is absolutely AMAZING, and a complete angel. I was diagnosed with cancer months leading up to the date of our wedding, and he and Rick kept in touch to check in on how I was feeling. The day of the wedding, he set up in suite at THe W Hotel, and was ready to go with my mom and I. My girls were in oogling his makeup and he is just such a gem. We had so much fun together, I wish the day could happen again. He is professional, a doll, and does just the most beautiful work. I looked like a beautiful bride and nothing like a cancer patient. There is no one in the world that I recommend over Carl Ray. He is truly the BEST!

I could not have been happier with Carl's work. He did such a great job making me look and feel beautiful for my special day. He was very attentive to my concerns, making sure I was happy with the makeup every step of the way. He was even willing to try about 10 different shades of lip gloss to ensure that I was completely satisfied with the color we picked. He is extremely professional, and, despite all of his credentials, he is also very down to earth and easy to talk to. He also did makeup for my mom and sister, and he did a really great job on them too. I highly recommend Carl to any bride who wants to look and feel like the best version of herself on her wedding day!

Carl is simply THEE BEST! I loved my makeup trial and absolutely LOVED my wedding day makeup (even more, if that's possible)! I have never felt more glamorous and comfortable! One of the things that amazed me most about Carl is how he still made me look and feel like ME, even after applying makeup, contouring, blending, adding a few false lashes, etc. for an hour, which is a rare talent for a makeup artist. He bumped up my eyes and accentuated the right areas, while keeping everything natural. My husband isn't huge into girls wearing tons of makeup, and he just loved my makeup as well. My makeup lasted all night and I went beautifully with the style of my wedding (soft and romantic — very spring feeling, since it was in April). It even lasted through a flood of tears during the ceremony (not a drop of mascara or eyeliner went anywhere). During the trial, he took the time to ask me questions about time of day and where we were getting married so he could assess what kind of look to apply. Also, for the level of clientele he works with, he is one of the most humble, positive, and down-to-earth people I've ever met. He made me feel totally comfortable from the moment I met him at my trial. If by chance Carl is out of your budget and you are wondering if you should splurge, definitely do so — he is 1000% worth it! He also did my sisters makeup on the day of my wedding and she just loved hers as well. Call early to get on his schedule. Thanks for everything, Carl!!

I first met Carl Ray when he did my makeup for a friend's wedding, which I loved, and so when I got engaged about a year later, I knew exactly who I would call. Lucky for me he was available!! Carl Ray did an absolutely FABULOUS job with my makeup, and with the makeup of my mom, mother-in-law and all of my friends. We all looked stunning! Not only is Carl Ray truly the best at what he does, but he is also warm, funny and totally calming in a bridal suite full of commotion. He is a pleasure to work with, and I cannot wait to work with him again. I also want to mention that Rick, the salon manager, was also amazing to work with as he continued to coordinate my ever-changing wedding day schedule!! Great team. Hands down, the best.

Carl did an amazing job on my makeup for both my engagement photo shoot and wedding. Though Carl’s schedule was pretty packed both times, Rick, the George Salon manager, worked with me to get a suitable time slot during cherry blossom season This was a pretty big deal because we had to move the photo shoot several times due to the changing forecast in peak blossom and also due to my travel schedule for work. Despite having to fit me in at 7am before his day long appointment with the First Lady, Carl was so happy and pleasant.

Unlike most brides, I had a makeup artist come into my suite to take care of my mom and bridesmaids and went to the George Salon by myself for hair and makeup. Originally, I wondered if maybe I should have made other arrangements so that we could all be together. In the end, it proved to be a great decision because wedding morning is supercrazy and this gave me the chance to relax before things ramped up even more. Also, while I loved the engagement makeup and it matched the morning, outdoor photo session, I wanted something more dramatic for my afternoon wedding and evening reception. Carl was so nice in accommodating my email request and, on the day of, he worked with me to modify my look for a more dramatic flair. I only wish I had more formal events that could justify using Carl’s makeup services!

Carl did my make up for both my engagement photos November 2011 and for my wedding day on December 1, 2012 (he also did my mom's make up on the wedding day). I have never felt so beautiful and confident in my life! I did not worry once about how I would look in the pictures and they came out wonderfully. The wedding was in the early afternoon and we had an evening reception but the make up lasted perfectly all day! I am so grateful to Carl and Rick (the salon manager) for everything they did to make everything stress free and perfect. I absolutely recommend!

Having Carl Ray do your makeup for your wedding and rehearsal dinner event is the best thing you can ever do for yourself as a bride. He did my makeup for these two events and I have never felt more beautiful and confident. Not only, is he the most talented makeup artist in the DC-area but he is one of the most calming, supportive and positive people you can have around you to get ready for these momentous events. He made my skin glow and look flawless while still accentuating all the right features. I felt glamorous and dramatic but still felt completely natural and looked like myself. He really understands a woman's face and features and knows what to play up and what to conceal. His makeup lasted all day and night and looked fresh in every high-definition photo that was taken of me. Best of all, working with Carl is such a treat. He is so kind, so fun to be around and so easy-going. He is a true professional and true class-act. Every bride should book him up as soon as you get engaged because it will be the best money you will ever spend. I can't stress enough what an amazing experience it is to get your makeup done by such a talented artist. I struggled to even begin writing a review for Carl, not because he is not fabulous (he is, in fact, very, very much the most FABULOUS), but because I wasn’t sure how to adequately express my most sincere thanks for what ended up being one of my absolute favorite parts of my wedding day.

I must first give a huge THANK YOU to Rick who, after some serious schedule finagling, managed to get me a seat in Carl’s chair, despite him already having an incredibly busy day. He put up with what seemed like never-ending phone calls and emails on my end, worked his magic, and helped make my wedding day just perfect. I cannot thank him enough.

As for my makeup – it goes without saying that Carl Ray is truly the master of his craft. When you read the reviews on here saying, “it’s the best I’ve ever looked!” and “flawless” and “I looked years younger!” – believe it. Carl has a touch that no one I’ve ever met – looking at someone, listening to them, and truly taking time to understand what they want are a huge part of why he is so successful. He is also an incredibly kind man – I rushed into the salon running VERY behind schedule, and was only about 2 hours away from the start of my ceremony (which was well across town). I was stressed and generally not happy, and both he and Rick were calm, reassuring, and made me feel fabulous. I managed to sit in his chair while I was there, not stressed, not constant clock-watching, just enjoy my time with Carl. It is so nice to work with someone who, despite being the best-of-the-best, is still kind, patient, and down to earth.

I like to think my photos speak for themselves, but in my opinion, I felt as absolutely incredible as I know I looked. Never better, glamorous, flawless, and fabulous. I looked like a much-improved version of myself which, in my opinion, is the best a bride can ask for.

So to Carl and Rick – THANK YOU! I hope to squeeze myself back into that chair in the very near future.

LOVE HIM!!!! A few years ago, I had horrible skin problems and some scarring from that. Carl made it all go away. Words cannot express how wonderful he made me feel on my wedding day. Not only that but the wedding lasted ALL DAY AND NIGHT. We took pictures before our ceremony for a few hours and my makeup looked just as flawless at the ceremony as it had when it first went on earlier in the day. He is the best!!!
