The altar table was created for St. Mary's in 1983 by Tom Hooper of St. Peter's Organ Works, London, and replicates the Wren era style found in the Church of St. Vedast, Foster Lane, the successor parish to St. Mary's.The altar floor is black and white marble. The text of the Ten Commandments is from the 17th century Prayer Book in use during Wren's time. The brass altar set is a gift from the St. Louis Friends of the National Churchill Museum.

"Nothing can add beauty to light," said Wren, and clear glass lets the beauty in. Following Wren's design, the replacement windows are clear, hand-blown glass manufactured by the Blenko Company of West Virgina. Clear glass was uncommon in churches of this age. No matter the weather, there is plenty of light that comes through the windows.

About

The Church of St. Mary is an original 17th century church originally located in London, England.

During the Great Fire of London in 1666, the church burnt to the ground. Christopher Wren, a famous English architect, redesigned and rebuilt the Church of St. Mary. In 1940 during the Blitz, the Church was gutted after a German incendiary bomb struck the center of the roof. For 25 years after the attack, the Church sat roofless and moss-grown, slated for demolition.

It was in the early 1960's that the proposal was made for the creation of a museum to Sir Winston Churchill and his famous "Iron Curtain" speech, which he delivered at Westminster College in 1946. In 1965, the Church was dismantled in London and shipped, 7,000 stones in all, to Westminster College, where it was reassembled and restored to the condition we see today. It serves as the ecumenical, inter-denominational chapel for the college.

In the 17th century, the church was recognized as the social and religious center for a number of England's major figures including John Milton and William Shakespeare.

It was a childhood dream to have my wedding at this church and I was very excited to book my wedding. The only thing I was disappointed with was the fact there was a wedding an hour after our wedding and their guests started showing up as ours were taking pictures. The other party wasn't happy with us being there and made it clear our time was up even though they arrived 45 min early. The staff wasn't present to help defuse the situtation.

This church is such a wonderful wedding venue. The graceful columns emphasize the magnificent architecture. The history of this building is awe inspiring. To stand in it's beautiful sanctuary brings to mind the many, many brides and grooms that have committed to one another in this place. There is no other church like this in all of North America. The lighting from the tall windows gives a soft glow to the room that lends itself well to photography. There are so many interesting details in the building that every wedding photo is unique. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Ivy Photography recommends this church to anyone seeking a fairy tale wedding.
