Your thoughts on fake cakes

What’s the point of having a fake cake? Just for show? I don’t get it.

I don't get the point of fake cakes either if it's just for show it can come across as rude or tacky especially when they will be able to tell when they are getting a grocery store cake in the back compared to this, there is nothing wrong with having a grocery store and if you can't afford an expensive cake my advice would go to Walmart or King Soopers but you get what you pay for if you want a fancy cake then find some how to include it in your budget for me cake is extremely important part of the wedding so we went big on it

The cake (or other desserts for those who are going with alternative options) is/are as important as the food and drinks since it affects the guest experience.

We are going with a real cake, but to save money, ours will be naked so no frosting, no flowers (neither sugar flowers or fresh ones), no decor on it since people won't remeber what the cake looked like but will remember whether it was delicious or not.

Most people who want something fake in order to save money, go with ... fake flowers instead of a fake cake.

The baker would still have to decorate the fake cake and the backroom cakes and so there's still a cost because there's labor involved. But cakes should not be thousands. Get pricing for local areas and I'm sure you can find nice ones for several hundred.

More modern alternatives to grandiose 5-tier cakes: How about going with a smaller, beautiful design (1-2 tiers), cut that for ceremony, and have sheet cakes in the back? Pinterest has beautiful designs. Or you can even go super modern and opt for alternative sweets like cakepops, bundt cakes, macarons for guests. But, you know your crowd and your priorities. Do your guests eat sweets?

I think they're silly and a waste of money. Spend your cake budget on some delicious sheet cakes if you can't afford a layered cake, or get a small layered cake to cut and supplement with sheet cakes (of equal quality).

Instead use the money towards something that can be put to use and enjoyed rather than sitting collecting dust like a fake cake. If you can't afford the expensive looking tiered cake then opt for small cakes, cupcakes, sheet cake (anything you decide that you like and works for your budget) that can "give you the best bang for your buck".

Research bakers in your area and give them designs you like to see what they'll quote you. Unless you're wanting a cake with multiple tiers, over the top décor, gold leaf etc, it shouldn't cost thousands...

I mean, most guests don't pay attention to the cake if it's not announced by the DJ, and if you aren't doing a cake cutting, then your guests won't notice it's fake unless they really pay attention. Personally I wouldn't spend $ for a fake cake just for display, especially if you're going to have real cake for guests made.

I have never heard of having a fake cake. I would put the money to getting a nice cake I could afford from the market.

Also in the "fake cakes are weird" camp.

I remember reading about them when I got married, and I thought it was weird then, too.

I think it would be better to get a nice cake from a market, or honestly even just a minimalist white cake, than to have a fancy fake cake.

We will be doing a small three-tier cake for the cake cutting ceremony and photos and deserts for guests will be cupcakes or sheet cakes! IMO it is very expensive to try and get a cake to serve 200 people.

Fake cakes make zero sense. If I was a guest and saw a large cake at a wedding then wasn't served any cake, I'd be so confused.

If you want to cut a cake, but cannot afford a big cake, do a small cutting cake and serve an alternative dessert or do a small decorative cutting cake and then serve a more simply designed sheet cake to guests.

Renting a fake cake for photos is the most ridiculous waste of money I have ever heard of.

Ok well a fake cake still seems really weird to me. It's on par with having bowls of fake fruit in your kitchen at home, which I also find bizarre. Obviously people do it, otherwise it wouldn't exist.

Would I pay $150 to rent a fake cake for a wedding? Absolutely 100% not.

I feel we need to show a cake at the wedding, therefore we will have a fake cake because it's too hot to have a cake sitting out that long. The cake for the guests is coming from a reputable Bakery in my area. Still want beautiful cakes that taste great.
