I know there are many people out there with different opinions on changing there last name. I personally want to change my name but I don't want to lose my name either. I have a connection to my current family and to the new one I am about to become a part of so hyphenating seems like the best way...

I know there are many people out there with different opinions on changing there last name. I personally want to change my name but I don't want to lose my name either. I have a connection to my current family and to the new one I am about to become a part of so hyphenating seems like the best way to go but I would love to hear from those of you that are about to do the same or have already done so. I only have a couple weeks left to be certain about it if I don't want to go through the hassle of changing it later. We are about to get our marriage licence from the courthouse in a couple of weeks and they require any name change when you fill out the application or else later it is an extra process to get a new marriage license and update the marital status in California.

That seems to be the general consensus the more comments I get. I'm really glad I asked the question. Thanks for the help.

That sounds like a good plan. If my first name wasn't long already I would consider that. Thank you and congratulations!

This is what my best friend did but she actually did it because it was such a hassle to switch her name completely it was just easier to move it to her middle name.

I plan on just changing it to be honest. Thats how it was always done and while I am very connected with my family its important to my FH for me to have his last name and our kids to have his last name. I honestly never thought any different of the situation I always planned from the time I was a little girl to take my husbands last name.

No prob! It’s definitely something to consider! He was willing to take mine but he’s the “last boy” in his family line so I’m just being flexible while holding on to my own heritage!

I’m glad this is more common than I thought! It’s also because I’m an academic so if I publish things I want to be recognized by my maiden name as well!
