Where is my marriage certificate? (ca)

Sharay, on August 31, 2019 at 1:28 PM Posted in Married Life 0 6
I got marrried July 14th it is now the end of August. I was told it could take 45 days to get to me it’s well passed the 45 days. I’m a bit annoyed at this point because I don’t want to have to pay the fees all over again it was about $200 for the license and certificate. How long did it take to all to get yours? Can I change my name with just the copy of the license? I do have that.

Is it 45 days from the wedding or from when it was submitted or is it 45 business days? When was it submitted to them? Have you called the clerks office to make sure they received it and see when you’ll receive yours?

As for changing your name, SSA will require a certified copy of the actual marriage certificate. A copy of the license won’t count.

Its not official until its actually recorded with the clerk's office. We're facing a similar issue, our Officiant didn't submit it until last week (married august 3rd), that's past the 10 day deadline so I'm freaking out about having to do this all over again...

    Hey Sharay!

Have you contacted the clerk's office? I would definitely recommend checking on the status of your marriage certificate if you are worried about it!

It is probably 45 business days, but I would call them and check up on it.

Note that I understand all states/counties are different, so your mileage may vary. Our officiant had to mail in the completed paperwork within 10 days of the ceremony. After it was processed by the county clerk (about a week), we had to place an order to receive a certified copy of our marriage certificate. The county we married in allowed us to do an online search to verify if it had been successfully verified and made available to order. We purchased a copy as soon as possible to submit to our employers as proof of our "life event". This triggered benefit enrollments, which my employer only allowed within 30 days of the wedding date, hence our rush.

I'm in California was married March 24th of this year and had my official marriage cert within like 2 weeks. It was super fast but I know that not the case for everyone. I'd check in with your officiant first, assuming they were left in charge to file it for you, then I'd check in with them to see if they have dates of when they sent it in.
