When to open gifts?

Lori, on May 14, 2019 at 11:59 PM Posted in Registry 0 15
I know this is dumb question, but I am going to go ahead and ask (I hate waiting)...we got our first wedding gift in the mail...can we open it or do we need to wait until after the wedding? Do I send thank you cards as soon as we open our gifts?

You should send thank you cards as soon as you get gifts. As far as opening it, technically nothing is stopping you. However, if the wedding is called off for whatever reason (not that this will happen), you are supposed to return the gift. That's why people typically don't open their gifts until after the wedding.

It's definitely awkward/exciting. I have a sheet set sitting in the corner of my living room because I'm not sure what to do with it lol.

Well... you're going to have to open the box to figure out what it is before you send a thank you. Smiley smile

I am opening mine when I get them and sending out thank you cards right away. Getting it done.

Haha yeah! For some reason I think of opening as opening it up and using it rather than just unwrapping it.

I like that method...I am starting to get a little stressed and this seems like a fun part in the midst of all the stress.

Oh yeah, open the box and see what it is. As a previous poster said, you have to open it to write the thank you note. And you want to send the thank you note ASAP so the sender knows you got the gift.

I'd open it as soon as you get it and then send a thank you out no less than a week after opening.

Also if it is an item that could have been damaged during shipping, I would peek in the actual box, ie Pyrex, etc. There was a bride that recently posted she'd received a broken pan.

I got a gift from out of town friends of ours. I opened it because I didn’t know it was a wedding gift(I do a lot of online shopping). I texted our friends letting them know that we got it, but haven’t sent a thank you card yet. I’m keeping a log of everything we receive and sending them all at once.
