What to do with my wedding dress?!

Kaitlyn, on June 4, 2022 at 6:13 PM Posted in Married Life 0 8
Hello all! My husband and I got married on 4/28. Now that things have calmed down and gone back to normal I’m trying to figure out what to do with my wedding dress. Right now it’s just hanging in our closet in the bag it came from the dress shop in. Which would be fine, but we live in a tiny apartment and it’s taken up valuable real estate in the closet. Any and all suggestions are welcome!
Ps- it’s a pretty large gown, so I’m unsure if it would fit in a preservation box? Photo for reference. What to do with my wedding dress?! 1

Congrats! Your dress is stunning. You could have your dress cleaned and preserved, you could donate it, you could have it or a piece of it turned into framed art. I still remember when I was like 10 my uncle's wife had her wedding dress made a into a christening gown and also had a christmas tree skirt made from pieces of it. The christening gown has been passed around a few times now but both things are such a sweet family heirlooms. Good luck to you!

Agree with the above. I am doing something creative and framing it to hang in our foyer to bedroom. However it might be nice to donate it to military brides who are in need of gowns but can’t afford them.

There are lots of options. I think the first thing you need to determine is whether or not you wish to keep it. Personally, I don’t have any sentimental attachments to clothing items (and there will be tons of pictures and video of me in it), so I don’t plan to keep mine. If you feel the same way, you could donate it; there are lots of organizations that will ensure it goes to someone in need. Or, you could try to sell it at a discount; there are lots of wedding dress resale sites online. You could also get a second use out of it by having a seamstress turn it into a cocktail dress for you to wear on your first anniversary. Or you could also have it turned into items that you will use for years to come, such as a tree skirt for your Christmas tree, pillowcases, throw pillow covers, night gowns, etc. Or, if you plan to have children, it could be made into an outfit for them to go home from the hospital, a hair bow, a christening outfit or communion dress (if such things apply to you), etc. You could also make a handkerchief or pocket square that your husband could wear on your anniversary (or maybe a vow renewal in the future?), or when one of your children get married. If you are sentimental about the dress, and want to keep it intact, I think the only options are to have it preserved and just store it away, or have it preserved in a display box/frame that you can hang.

My FMIL just had her dress made into a robe for her daughter's future wedding, and ties/pocket squares for her two sons to wear on their wedding days

    Beautiful gown!

i honestly just kept mine in the dress bag in my closet haha. it's kind of hard thinking of what to do with it because it is large and i feel like even if it was framed, it takes so much space, etc.

you can wear it for halloween as a costume haha

I recently came across the idea of “trash the dress,” which is to hire a photographer to take a picture somewhere where your would ordinarily not do so on your wedding day because it will get the dress filthy. Somewhere like in a beautiful scenic water place standing in water or hopping over stones etc. I’m really loving that idea personally right now.

I saw someplace that a girl had her dress shortened and she planned to wear it whenever her and her husband went out for their anniversaries. That seemed like a neat idea. I may do that and then have the scraps preserved in resin as coasters or a picture frame, made into a christening gown, a hair accessory of some kind, a pocket square for FH (that he could hold onto for any of our potential future kids' weddings), or something like that. I really don't see a point in holding onto a huge gown that I'll never do anything with, so we'll see what happens there.

Ha, I don't fit either of my dresses anymore (< 1 year later!). I set up a free-standing fabric closet in my apartment, but now looking into repurposing or letting go. Here for ideas.
