What happens after the deadline to change name is up?

Vallery, on April 29, 2021 at 12:21 AM Posted in Married Life 1 6
I already got my new social security card with my changed name and now need my new drivers license with my married name on them. I checked my states dmv website and it says” North Carolina law requires you to notify the NCDMV of your name change within 60 days of your wedding” What does that even mean??? All the dmvs near me are scheduling appointments a month out so it’s going to be more than 60 days.

It’s not a crime, don’t worry about that. Technically, your name is already changed, you just have not notified them yet.

Especially right now with how far out they’re booking appointments, I would just make an appointment for as soon as you can and if they ask why it’s more than the 60 days explain that they had no available appointments before the one you chose.

I agree with this! And I'm not sure, but perhaps "requesting the appointment" may even count as "notifying" them? Either way, you're doing the best you can (or anyone can!), and it sounds like everyone is in the same boat right now, so I really doubt they can be tough on people for that these days. I see that your wedding is listed in March 2021, so I would think you'd be fine!!

I agree with PP on the notification aspect, but are you able to just do a walk up at your DV? Our (CA) DMVs were the same in terms of appointments being months out, so I just went to one of my local branches and waited in line. I was in and out within the hour with everything changed. Just another thought if you don’t want to wait months for an appointment.

Oh and something we do around here - check out a dmv in a smaller town. Whenever I go to the DMV I go to one that’s an hour away because it’s in small town and there is never a wait. Plus the employees are really nice LOL

All the dmvs near me are doing appointment only but I did get ahold of somebody at NCDMV today and she said that while you are supposed to update it within 60 days so they can keep their records updated they are more understanding because of COVID and all the places doing appointment only. So everything should be okay.
