Signature on CO Wedding License is maiden name - how do I change name legally to married name?

Patty, on July 31, 2017 at 6:51 AM Posted in Married Life 0 2

I'm SO happy that I can take my husband's last name. But when signing the wedding license for CO, it does not state what name to sign it with, apart from Party 1. So I still signed with my maiden name. Now I want to have all my legal documents (SSN, Passport, Driver's License, etc) show my married name, but I'm concerned that I won't be able to do this because of how I signed the license. Anyone know what needs to be done in CO specifically with changing names?

You sign your marriage license with your maiden name because it is your name.

Take the license to the SS office and have your card changed. Then go to DMV. Once you have your drivers license changed, all you have to do is show other organizations your license (and sometimes marriage certificate) and they'll change your name in their systems. You have to do it all yourself; it doesn't just happen when you get married unfortunately.

You always sign your maiden name because until SS changes it, that's your name.

I don't know if it's exactly the same everywhere but usually, you have to wait to get your REAL license (with the court seal) and then you take it to SS and then to DMV. What you signed technically isn't your license; it's an application.

Call the issuing court. Don't rely on info from us
