Registry???

Tone, on March 2, 2021 at 1:56 PM Posted in Registry 0 10

I have no idea what to register for. For context we don’t have our own home, we live with my grandmother and I take care of her full-time because of this we don’t have the space to store a lot of things and we are moving across the country in 10 months for work reasons. Anything we get has to be stored and transported when we move, because of this we don’t have a registry currently set up but my sister wants to throw me a bridal shower and people have been asking about a registry. Do you have to have a registry for a bridal shower? Also what would I register for?

You could register for things that you can use for when you move! Kitchen items such as pots/pans, silverware, dishes, cutting boards, etc. Bathroom items such as shower curtain, towels, bath rugs, etc. Anything that would be helpful to have in your new house that you don't currently have. Or, you could register for things that you want or things you want to upgrade! New bedding, camping gear, sports equipment, etc.

You could have a themed shower like "stock the bar" or "kitchen" where people would likely bring smaller gifts of wine/liquor/accessories or small kitchen item like spatulas, kitchen towels, etc. You could set up a small registry at Target for things like newer bath towels, kitchen towels/washcloths, sheets, set of plates you like. I know you would have to move them soon, but any sort of linens will move very easily and if you keep things like plates in boxes it makes them pretty easy to store and move as well.

You could also just have a bridal lunch/tea instead of shower which would indicate a non gift giving event. Or just decline to have a shower!

    This!

I'd focus on registering for things that you know you'll need when you get your new home. Like Lisa mentioned, basic kitchen, bathroom, and home items are great for your registry! If you already have most of those items, you could always look at upgrading them. That's what my FH and I did!

How about gift cards? That way you don’t have to pay for storage or the cost for moving it.

Yes you have a registry for the shower and wedding. Otherwise you will get gifts you don't want and can't return. Do not assume you will get cash/giftcards only. Take a look at registries online such as at Bed Bath and Beyond as a starting point. It does not have to be all household items. You can register for a Margaritaville, coffee maker, board games, camping gear.

A shower is for physical gifts. Many guests do not contribute to honeymoon funds or give gift cards.

My fiancé and I own our home and don't need anything. We thought about just registering for random things to upgrade from what we have now, but we think we are doing a gift card shower. We would have done a stock the bar party, but our venue doesn't allow outside alcohol.

If you don't have the room, I would just ask for gift cards that you could use when you're ready to buy things for your home! You could do like Lowes and Target - super generic and you both could get use out of them! Just an idea!

Look into registering at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. They have a "ship or swap" option where guests pick out gifts but instead of receiving the gift, the funds just get added to your account. I know for a shower you typically open gifts there but could be a useful option for wedding gifts!

And yes, if you don't create a registry you will get some wild gifts - you'll even get some wild gifts if you DO create a registry! FH and I currently live in 2 small one bedroom apartments and are moving into a condo, all in the middle of a city. Someone just gifted us a large hammock to permanently mount in a yard!!!

Here's the link to the ship or swap program:

Just a tip- if you register for items through Zola, and people purchase them online, they have the option to let you ship the items when you want. So they can purchase a specific item off your registry and then you choose to ship it later. This might be a really good option for you, and you can even add a note on your registry that says something like "we really appreciate your kind gifts! Due to limited space, we may choose to have some of our gifts ship after our wedding. Please select the option that allows us to ship when ready." You can also register for gift cards, experiences (date nights, etc), and a cash fund on Zola so you also have an assortment of non-physical gifts. As far as actual items, I agree with others about starting to figure out what you will need eventually. But you can keep it to smaller items like towels, silverware, cups, plates and if you do receive some physical gifts, just keep them wrapped up or boxed and put away/stored until you move.

Definitely do a registry other wise like people have said you will end up with gifts you don't want or need and be stuck trying to sell it because you can't return it.

You could register for small bathroom stuff like soap dish, trash can, toothbrush holder. Kitchen stuff like silverware, mixing bowls, mixer.

Thank you all for the advice!!! I ended up sitting down with FH today and making a target registry of things we can A.upgrade and B.move easily. My family thats been asking was very enthusiastic about receiving the link and being told they can get us things (since we were unsure on it for so long).
