Registry and Gofundme??

Jade, on March 2, 2021 at 11:23 PM Posted in Registry 0 16

We are saving for our honey moon! I dont know if it is a good idea or not to have a registry and a GoFundMe for my guests. For example, if someone does not want to buy a gift or all of the items have already been bought, they could donate to the honey moon fund. Thoughts or advice? Smiley smile

GoFundMe is for emergencies and charity, your wedding is neither of those things. This is extremely tacky. If people don’t want to give a physical gift, they will give cash or a check.

I'd recommend having a Honeyfund instead of a GoFundMe. A GoFundMe would come across as very tacky while a Honeyfund (while still controversial in some social circles) would be far more appropriate. Or, you could consider using a site like the Knot or Zola where you can register for honeymoon 'activities' in different monetary amounts. Either way, avoid the GoFundMe.

We used Honeyfund! Easy. Zola is another one that’ll let guests gift you cash.

We’re doing cash funds through Zola, as it allows us to cover the cost of the processing fee (2.5%) instead of the guests having to pay extra for it. They let you do custom funds, so you can designate a honeymoon fund, cooking class fund, date night fund, whatever. I want to get my bouquet preserved in resin, so I made a fund for that because I thought people would like to donate to a specific memorable thing rather than just have a general cash grab. We will also have a card box at the wedding on the guest book table so if people prefer to gift that way, they still can. I think cash funds are becoming more socially acceptable in the US with time, but you still have to handle them gracefully so it doesn’t look tacky or rude. Definitely recommend avoiding GoFundMe and sticking with more wedding-specific ones!

GoFundme is for medical emergencies, not weddings. If you don't register, you will get gifts you don't want and cannot return. Never expect that guests will give you cash or equivalent that they feel you should pay for yourselves.

The proper term is a honeymoon fund, and we used The Knot's version. We found it offered a safe way to transfer funds, without limiting when we could access them.

People do like to buy you 'experiences', but expect to also just get cash.

In addition, feel free to browse the "Planning Tools" and articles on this site, they can help a lot!

Definitely not a GoFundMe- they keep a portion of it.
We’re just doing a honeymoon fund & have it set up on our website with The Knot.

Just a note to some PPs: GFM is not only for medical emergencies. It is a crowdfunding site that can be used for any major event for which people are trying to raise money, including celebrations - the site's categories even specifically include "events," "travel," and "wishes." That's why it's called "GoFundMe" not "GoFundMed."

However, because of the site's perception as "for medical emergencies," your guests would probably perceive it poorly, so as others have said, look up true "honeymoon registry" sites. There are some that allow just a general donation, and some that will let you itemize so guests still feel like they are giving you a "gift" (such as an experience to swim with dolphins, or whatever else you may be eyeing.)

The intentions are totally great and fine, but not on GoFundMe - I agree with others to use Zola or HoneyFund. GoFundMe is a little tacky - I don't think it's only used for one thing over another, but I just think it would look kind of funny for a honey moon or wedding fund!

But the idea of money being donated to the honeymoon fund rather than a registry is totally okay!

I also agree. I seen a guy raising money just to get a taco. His post literally said " I just want to see how many idiots donate money for me to get a taco I can easily afford" the kicker was people actually donated to him.

Gofundme is not used for things like wedding presents. If you would like to set up a honeymoon fund, there are several sites that offer that.

Any sort of cash fund is tacky AF. EVERYONE knows that cash is a good gift and will send some or write a check if they want to give a gift that is not off the registry.

We have a Honeymoon fund on our website (Zola). My fiancé and I have lived on our own for so long there’s not much houseware stuff that we need. So we registered for things that we need to replace for people who insist on buying physical gifts, like my grandparents.
