Registry advice - so many options

Sarah, on July 7, 2021 at 9:59 AM Posted in Registry 0 13
My fiancé and I are really struggling with putting together a registry. We’re just out of college and don’t have a lot of stuff starting out so we have a quite a bit to add to the registry. The thing is neither of us like shopping at all, there are too many options and it feels overwhelming. Does anyone have some advice on how you pick the items for your registry and not spend hours deciding for each thing?

If you do a registry on sites like Amazon, Target etc it should give you recommendations on what to add. I used Amazon for both my baby registry and our wedding registry and didn't have any complaints at all. Put down things that you and your fiance would want in your home. I usually would recommend adding gift cards as well but you don't like shopping lol.

My Fiancé and I have lived together for awhile so we will be upgrading things

    Here are some ideas

    Flatware

    Drinking glasses

    Dishes (at least 6)

    Bowls (at least 6)

(I got a set that came with large plates, small plates, bowls and coffee mugs - 4 each) - so if you can find something like that you might want to register for two

    Measuring cups and spoons

    Knife block

    Toaster Oven/Air Fryer

    Hand Mixer

    Cutting Boards

    Wooden Spoons

    Spatulas/Serving Spoons/Ladle

    Cheese Grater

    Cast Iron Skillet

    Pots and Pans

    Whisk

    Oven Mitts

    InstaPot/Pressure Cooker/CrockPot

    Teapot

    Coffee Maker

    Meat Thermometer

    Pasta Strainer

Baking Dishes (glass) - Casserole Dishes

    Mixing bowls

    Glass measuring cup

    Stand Mixer with attachments

    Wine Glasses/Whiskey Glasses

    Tupperware

Glass Storage with lids for food

    Baking Sheets

    Pizza Stone

    Peeler

    salt and pepper shakers

    place mats

    Bathroom Towels/Wash Cloths

    Bathroom Rugs

    Bed Sheets/Comforter

    Throw Blankets

    Mattress Topper

    Pillows

    Luggage

    Various Tools and Power tools

I know its a lot but just stick to the basics, pick things you'd like and use. If you don't have space for things (like a Kitchen Aid stand mixer) leave it off the registry.

This is a great list to go by!!

We used Zola, Target, and Crate & Barrel for our registries. All of them have checklists that help you figure out what you need and don't need.

We kept things simple and registered for good quality items that would last, (Ex we added white plates that can be used daily or for special occasions. By keeping it simple it’ll be easy to “dress up” for holidays). I’m a visual person and this may be a type a thing to do but I made a google sheets document with all the items we registered for. I found it a lot easier than jumping back and forth between the stores we registered at and remembering which items we registered for and if it’ll all look good together. Below are some screenshots to give you an idea. We’re registered at Bed Bath & Beyond, Macy’s, and Bloomingdales.Registry advice - so many options 1

How do you go about picking which bowls and which cups and all? We’re using Amazon and bb&b and there are seven pages of pots and pans sets on Amazon alone. Do you have any suggestions for choosing prices, styles, anything like that?

Some websites like Bed Bath and Beyond have check lists of items to add. Theirs is categorized by room. We used that and just kind of picked what we liked. We did some research on some bigger ticket items (namely kitchen knives). We also just walked around the store and looked at stuff just walked the isles not looking for anything in particular.

I went by quality and price range!

We made sure to have a few items in each of these price ranges: Under $25. $25-$50. $50-$99. $100-$199. $150-$199. We kept the majority of our registries within the under $25-$99 range, with a few splurge items in the higher price points.

You can decide what quality you want, but we went with a matching dinnerware set that was $20 for a pack of 4, and registered for 3 of those. That way we have 12 place setting for when we entertain. We wanted to have something around the middle with quality and pricing. Didn't want to registry for anything cheap so that it will last us longer, but also not TOO expensive to where our guests will side eye us lol.

For styles/colors. We chose neutrals and classics. White for our dinnerware, silver for our flatware, and smooth lines for our drinkware. Nothing too embellished or with a lot of color, because I like pieces that I can use year round (versatile).

Also wanted to add that for pots and pans, we chose a Calphalon set that stacks to save space and comes with lids. For the vacuum we added a Dyson pet vacuum, a Staub Dutch Oven. Those are a few of our 'splurge' items.

I'd highly recommend going plain for your dishware vs. patterned. Not only will it allow you more easily replace something if it breaks down the line (plain white plates are so much easier to find than a bright patterned plate) but it will also be easier to transition through styles you may go through. Also, I'd definitely recommend going with a higher quality item than a less inexpensive item. If you can, go into a BBB or other type store to touch and feel different plates/glasses/etc. You want something that will hold up for a long time. If you're just registering online, read through reviews to find quality items. Even though you don't enjoy shopping, putting in the time now to choose items that are quality will make it easier for you down the line when you're not replacing something every year or two.

I am in your shoes!! My fiance and I are just out of college and need lots of things to start our life together. It would have been very overwhelming for me had I not had a list. I would highly recommend Bed Bath & Beyond. All of their things are high quality and the list is comprehensive. Target is also a good option.

Lots of good suggestions already given. I've been married nearly 35 years, and I strongly support choosing good quality items you will likely use for decades (that doesn't necessarily mean choosing the most expensive). Flatware is a really good example -- stainless steel "silverware" varies SO much in terms of strength, durability, finish, etc. For something you're going to use everyday, you want good quality that will last. Go to stores and hold the spoons, knives, etc., in your hands. Try to "bend" them -- you'll be shocked at how flimsy some are. Find something strong and solid, in a pattern you like, and they will last forever. Pots and pans are another long-term investment, so look at them, touch them, and read reviews. Good quality cookies sheets are one of my personal favorites -- I still use (and love) the Airbake cookie sheets an aunt gave me as a shower gift. Another "investment" item is good quality knives. Other stuff, like everyday glasses, kitchen linens, small appliances, etc., aren't going to last forever, so pick something you like the look and feel of because you'll likely replace them every couple years any way.

Things I'm still using 35 years later: everyday and good china (and crystal), Farberware stainless steel pots and pans, KitchenAid stand mixer, knife set, Corningware casserole dishes (varying sizes w/ lids), stainless steel roasting pan & rack, etc. I've replaced most of my original small appliances (a few times...), but things I use all the time: crockpot, blender (I've had so many, but I LOVE my Ninja!), and coffee maker. Choose some good quality (for me that means 100% cotton) sheets and towels. Again, quality varies SO much, but you can find good quality items that aren't ridiculously expensive. Pps mentioned choosing white dishes for versatility; I think the same way about linens -- all white -- which means they go with everything and you can bleach them if they get stained.

It can seem overwhelming at the start, but you don't have to do it all at once. Consider registering at two different sites/stores. Daughter used Macy's for her good china, flatware, etc., and then Kohl's for her appliances, household goods and linens (unfortunately, they ended their registry service right after her wedding). Amazon is good, but consider also choosing a store since some guests might prefer shopping in person. BB&B carries a huge variety of items -- and ALWAYS has coupons! Smiley winking Good luck -- and have fun!

    Hi there!

We are registered at Target and Bed Bath and Beyond, Both stores have great affordable options. What I really LOVE about Bed Bath and Beyond is they have a section you can scroll through with TOP wedding registry items. This section covers mostly anything you could think of! It made it SO easy to add items, even ones you never even thought of but you could 100% use!

Some of the main must haves on our list:

a good set of cooking/ baking pans, vacuum, crock pot (I love crock pot cooking) baking pans, pet cleaner, storage containers/ closet organizers (we live in an apartment where space is limited so we most definitely could use extra storage space Smiley smile ) a nice set of dishes, kitchen aid mixer, casserole dishes.

Make sure you pick items with a variety of prices ranges, giving your guests options affordable for all budgets.

If you are feeling overwhelmed go with the basics, especially since you both are just starting out. Go from room to room and think about what you could use.

Kitchen: Cups, dishes, bakeware, silverware, mixer, pots pans, utensils, pot holders,

Bathroom: drawer organizer, shampoo, conditioner/soap caddy, toilet scrubber, toilet plunger, tooth brush holder, towels

Bedroom: Bedding set, extra set of sheets, pillows, mattress topper,

Living room: storage bins/ baskets, wall clock/ art, lamps, end tables

Misc: drill set, paper shredder, file cabinet, wireless printer

    I hope this helps!

    Goodlcuk to you! Smiley smile

    Sam
