Randomly changed my name at work after dragging for 7 months - is it strange?

Haley, on August 16, 2022 at 8:05 PM Posted in Married Life 0 4
Hi all!

My husband and I were married on 12-18-2021 🥰
I dragged my feet when it came to changing my name. It just wasn’t a huge priority to me. But now I would say the majority of my documents have been changed - drivers license, social security card, most credit cards, bank accounts, etc.
I just processed my name change at work and it’s taking effect tomorrow. I work in accounting and work from home but I’m afraid my workplace is going to find it strange that I changed my name 8 months after I got married. Should I send out a note to my team to let them know about my new last name? Im not trying to make a big deal out of it and not really sure what the corporate protocol is for these sorts of things. Any advice is appreciated!!

I just casually added a note at the bottom of my signature in red font saying “Please note my email has changed to….”

It’s definitely not weird. My former boss got married in January 2021 and only just now changed everything to her new name from what I see on her LinkedIn hahaha.

Not weird. As the PP suggested, just add a line within your signature stating that your email has changed.

I got married in 2020 and I'm planning on changing my name later this year after my next flight in October. Better late than never lol 🤷‍♀️

Speaking as someone who interacts regularly with many colleagues in different departments who I don’t work alongside in the same office, I don’t think you need to say anything. It is not anyone else’s business whether or not you change your name, and if so, on what timeline. If anyone asks it is totally fine telling them but otherwise I don’t really see this as one of those things that needs addressing (unless your workplace doesn’t have an email re-direct set up if your email address has changed too).

A lot of the people I work with just include a line above their email signature along the lines of "Please note my email has changed to..." Unless your maiden name is part of your email in some way and/ or it won't redirect, I don't think you need to say anything.
