Prayers Please

Veronica, on December 19, 2019 at 12:05 PM Posted in Married Life 0 25
My husband and I got married in July. The day he went back to work after our honeymoon he was fired. He works in construction and the apartment complex he was building kept having problems and they fired everyone working on the site. He got a new job the end of August and started in September. Yesterday, he was forced to resign or he would be fired. The new company had 4 people in his position between July and him starting in September, but he didn't find this out until his first day. He warned me this would be a difficult company to work for. We never expected him to be forced to resign. I can't believe they would do this a week before Christmas. We live 3+ hours from our families and just signed a new lease in the middle of October for 1 year. The lease can't be broken without us paying rent until they find a new person to rent the apartment. I can't believe this happening. I thought married life is supposed to be fun and happy especially in the beginning not super stressed and depressing. My husband and I could really use happy thoughts.

Thanks 😊 I am trying to be strong for him, but I keep breaking down in tears. My job doesn't pay enough to support both of us.

Thank you! My parents offered us jobs with their company, but because of the apartment that really isn't an option at this point.

They bamboozled him. He shouldn't have resigned. If he would have been let go he would have had a chance to file for unemployment. The company gave him the "choice" so they wouldnt have to pay further.

Thanks 😊 Thry gave him two options. Resign and they would just acknowledge that he worked for them or they would fire him and tell any future employers that he was an awful employee and they fired him.

First off, That is considered blackballing and it is illegal. He shouldn't have let them force him to make that decision. I'm so sorry that happened.

Secondly, he can report the to the BBB for toxic work environment and also let them know about this situation. Companies are not allowed to do those types of things.

They didn't give him much of a choice. After reading reviews, they are a terrible company. They have horrible reviews. He was desperate to get a job when he took it so he didn't read any of the reviews.

Thank you 😊 I hope we can figure out some sort of plan. If we could move back where are family was that would be better, but I don't know what we would do about our apartment. My mom said the first two are the hardest.

Typically, you won't be held liable for the rent if you or they can find a substitute tenant. It might be worth looking for one.

Have you thought about subleasing your apartment? Or finding someone to take over the rent before telling the leasing office you are moving? I would talk with someone in the office to see what the process would look like. That way you have the substitute person ready to move in and there shouldn't be any fees unless the charge to transfer the lease? Just a thought Smiley smile

That is an option in our lease, but the complex we will live has a whole process for this and they must approved of the person. The problem for us is we don't really know anyone where we live so finding someone to take over our lease might be difficult, but I am definitely keeping that in mind.

They have a whole process for this and the new person would have to go through a bunch of steps. The other issue is I don't know if my husband would actually want to work for my parents as they own a pest control business and he isn't really into that kind of stuff. Frankly I feel like it could just be temporary until we got back on our feet. My parents are moving and they said we could stay in their old house for free if we kept up the up keep.

That sounds like an amazing offer from your parents. I know it may not be his field of interest but he really should consider it just for now until he can find something better in the field he loves.

It really is an amazing offer. I definitely think he should consider it, but I don't want to make him do something he doesn't want to do. The town my parents live in don't really have anything in his field so living there would only be very temporary.

Can he apply for unemployment? He may not get his normal pay amount but it would be something coming in. I know it's different from state to state but it wont hurt to look into it.

What about disability? A doctor could put him on temporary disability due to stress and he would be able to get 2/3 of his income once its filed with the state. He can the time to look for work, go back to school or just decompress and get a plan of action. Disability insurance is approved based on the amount of quarters he's worked. If he's worked for years and makes a decent amount he could be approved for awhile with a nice amount of money coming in.

He would have to find a doctor willing to do this and he doesn't currently have a doctor.
