Picking a makeup & hair artist

Cynthia, on April 1, 2020 at 11:15 PM Posted in Illinois Planning 0 6
Hi all-
I have been researching and looking at photos of various artist. In all honesty, they all look the same now. How did you pick or how are you going about picking a makeup artist? Any recommendations from my Chicago brides? I do not have the money to do more than one preview, so the one I pick is “the one”. Help!

I searched an area specific hashtag on Instagram (I think it was along the lines of #myareaweddingmakeup). I looked at all the tags and made note of the ones that caught my eye. In my case, the ones I was drawn to most were always posted by the same MUA. I reached out to him and used my engagement shoot for my trial. I loved what he did and it photographed beautifully, so I hired him for my wedding. I did the same thing with my hairstylist (though I haven't had my trial yet due to COVID).

I also found my HAMU artist through Instagram, just searching different variations of Philly hair and makeup, philly makeup artist, etc. I had a list of 3 or so artists that were all similar so I ended up going with the one who offered tiered package pricing for hair & makeup.

Like all other vendor selections, after researching them.... you need to speak with them. That’s a huge piece. No matter how amazing their website looks and despite awards, recommendations, prices and other hoopla... you need to vibe with the vendor, feel comfortable with them and in their replies, knowledge, skills and ability to execute what you want.

I found my MUA through Instagram and then found my hair artist through her! My venue tagged my MUA in a lot of their posts since she does so much makeup there for their brides. I picked her since I loved the way her work looked on insta and she was very responsive to my communication. Then I asked who she recommended for hair and booked my hair artist.

I found my HMUA on WeddingWire. I had messaged a few and then spoke to them and then made my choice. Of course I checked her website, Instagram page, etc but it was only after I spoke with her that I knew she was the one.

My MatronOH recommended the H/MUA she had for her wedding. Since I was with her when she was doing her searching and saw the end result of the lady she ended up selecting - wedding day make-up was beautiful and lasted all day/night (done at 10a) and updo hairstyle was also beautiful, I decided to request a trial for myself. I looked at pictures of her work online. I was very pleased with my trial and hired her. I loved her personality. It felt like we knew each other. And I liked that she looked at the pictures I sent prior to my session and listened to what I wanted. When I arrived to the salon, there was another bride there for a trial and looked absolutely stunning. I feel she offered a good price - this is my opinion, since she was the only one I checked out, I don't have any comparison prices. Her price included H/MU trial - all MAC products, wedding day H/MU and her travel cost. She will also do my bridesmaids, mother and MIL the day of if they want, also for a decent price. Good luck in your search!
