Passport name change

Go on the US government passport website and find the right form for a name change. They’ll tell you what you need and what the fee is. I think if it’s name change only and not renewal you don’t have a fee but check. Then you mail it using USPS and get a tracking number and it takes up to 8 weeks. I needed a name change and renewal so I had to send form DS-82 with my payment, passport photo, old passport and marriage license.

Then take care of passport, drivers license, etc. The name change on a passport is only complimentary if you’ve changed your name within 12 months of the date your passport was issued. Otherwise there’s a change fee. When changing your name with your usual passport renewal, it’s just the standard renewal fee. Renewals and name changes are done by mail, so that’s nice not having to go in person to an office.

I changed my passport name before I did my social security, you do not have to do it first for your passport but you must have it done for your license. I was still in the time frame to change my passport fee free so I sent it immediately and got it back two weeks later. I then did my social security, ID/drivers license and the rest of my documents, banking, car loans, etc.
