Name Change

Veronica, on August 6, 2019 at 4:12 PM Posted in Married Life 0 8

I am working on updating everything with my new last name. Originally, I wasn't going to be able to change it until after our friend's wedding in November since it was a cruise and they required my ID prior to our wedding, but they recently broke up and the wedding is cancelled. I haven't done much research on changing my name since I thought I had plenty of time, but I would like to change it now that I can. I'm trying to make sure I change everything so I have made a list. Let me know if there is anything else you can think of.

Driver's License

Social Security Card

Bank Accounts

Credit Cards

Student Loans

I have a lease, but it ends in October so not going to bother

Phone is in my mom's name

Car is in my grandmother's name

Library Account

Don't have a passport

No life insurance

New job so I don't have health insurance yet

Tax information

Doctor's office

Dentist

Also, to change my social security card do you guys know what documents I need? I know I need my license, but I don't know if they will accept it with my old last name. If not, that's going to be a problem because I talked to the dvm and they required an updated social security card to update my driver's license.

Your social security card is the very first thing you need to change. You'll need your license and a certified copy of your marriage certificate.

So it doesn't matter that my license will have my old last name?

No. You're literally there to change your name. They don't expect your name to be changed already. Everything else is based off of your SS card.

Okay thanks! Everything I was Googling said to bring your ID, but it didn't say if it had to have the new name. I tried calling Social Security, but the hold time was over 40 minutes.

In fact it NEEDS to have your old last name, to show that you are the person who belongs to the social security number who wishes for a name change. Your name is not changed until you file with the social security office.

I took all of my.legal documents (old SS card, license, birth certificate, marriage certificate). Figured it was better safe than sorry and nobody can argue that I couldn't prove who I was! Haha

Your employer (including updating your name and withholding on tax forms). Any reward programs, like frequent flyer or hotels. Hotels might not be a big deal but if you want to redeem airline points/miles for a flight most airlines only let you reserve the flight under the name on file with the rewards program. Which of course can be a problem with TSA when you show up with a ticket in one name and ID in another. 😆
