I recommend going to SSA's website. It tells you what they need. I printed it all off so I can send it as soon as we get the marriage license certified copies back from our county.
I'm in California and I mailed just my application with my marriage certificate and a copy of both the front and back of my ID. The rep I spoke with said I didn't need to include my ID but I did anyways just in case.
Thank you. That was what I most concerned about, whether or not to include a copy of my ID.

Well for someone that's about to go through this process two times, they misspelled my first name and I'm not sure how that happened but whatever, I sent my passport as well as my marriage license because one of the other options was my driver's license and there is no way I'm driving around without my driver's license
I had to mail my current driver license, marriage certificate, and social security card. I didn’t have an original copy of my birth certificate, so they told me to mail my license in place of that.
I mailed in my application, marriage certificate, and passport. I received my certificate and passport back within a couple of weeks through certified mail and my new SS card a few weeks after that. If I remember correctly, they need original documents and not copies (there have been people I've talked to who had their application put on hold because they sent in copies). I'd definitely recommend sending your documents and application to your SSA office via certified mail to make sure they're secure.
I just want to comment because my local SSA did me dirty. Make sure u have more than 1 official marriage certificate because in my situation I only ordered one and SSA office LOST my marriage certificate and didn’t take my inquiry seriously. Took them 2months before they figured out they lost it.
To answer ur question I just mailed in the application and marriage certificate.
