Name Change

Nicole, on July 24, 2019 at 10:12 AM Posted in Married Life 0 11

I have a few questions about changing my name. We are getting married in October but not taking our honeymoon until January. I wasn't sure if I should wait to change my name before or not. We haven't booked anything yet and are looking at both international and staying in the US for our trip so I am not sure if I would need a passport or not. I imagine if we do go out of the country I should wait to change it because a new passport would take too long to get. How long was the process of changing your name? Is there an amount of time you have before you have to change your name?

If you are going international, wait to change your name until after you return (due to passport changes), if you are staying in the states, you can change it immediately. International changes can take several months, national changes are up to 1 month. All of my changes were done within 1 week.

If you want international I'd wait just to not risk anything. If you're staying in the US it'll all be done by then.

It took me about 6 weeks to get my name changed on my SS card, license and bank. I dont have a passport so I cant tell you how long that takes. Most of my time was waiting for the certified copies to be mailed.

But either way, I would probably wait just to avoid the hassle. As for a time frame, theres no limit on when you can change your name. I have a friend who's been married over a yesr and still hasnt changed hers. She said I inspired her to get on it with how quickly I did it lol

You never have to change your name. So there's no issue there.
I just applied for my passport. We are getting married in March. We booked everything under my current name. So married in March, honeymoon in April. When we get back, I'm changing my name. I can change my name on my passport for free since it will be less than a year after I applied.

There isn't a certain amount of time to change it, but if you're going to need a passport then I'd wait till you get back from your honeymoon.

No harm in waiting. Changing your name can take time as for much of it, each step needs to be completed before the next. So, can’t start until you get your marriage certificate, which can take a little time. Then you take that and apply for a social security card which can take a little time . Then you take that and get a new license , which can take a little time. You need all those things before you can even start a passport application/name change. So, it may be possible in that timeline but with so many moving parts, I wouldn’t risk it— there’s harm in rushing if something gets delayed, but there’s no harm in waiting until after the honeymoon.

Thanks everyone! I think if we stay in the states I'll go ahead and change it sounds like 3 months is more than enough time but if we decide to go out of the country I'll wait till we get back.

I recommend waiting until after your honeymoon to change your name if a passport is needed. When I spoke to the passport agency they said it is super easy to change your name on your passport! It is only one form that you mail in with the passport then they send you a new one in the mail a few weeks later.
