Name Change when your honeymoon is a month out

Kimberly, on July 1, 2019 at 3:27 PM Posted in Married Life 0 11

Hey everyone,

I just got married on Saturday, but we won't be leaving for our honeymoon until mid-August. I have time between now and then, so I'd love to ideally take care of changing my name at least on my SS and Driver's License, but I won't risk changing my passport until after we get back. Those of you who have already done this, do you think there's any concern with changing my name on other forms of ID (SS/DL) and not my passport? Any reason that would get flagged? Trying to make it easy, without having to wait a solid 2 months before I change my name on anything.

Thanks in advance!

Are you traveling out of the country where you would need your passport? If so I would hold off on changing your name.

If you are traveling out of the country, I think your name on your passport needs to match the name on your flight tickets at least.

Thanks for replying guys! Yes to both. I'm traveling out of country, and definitely wouldn't change my passport until post-honeymoon, as tickets are in my maiden name. I guess I was just wondering if there's any harm in changing my name on other forms of ID such as my SS card and Driver's License. Sounds like the safe thing to do is hold off changing it anywhere until after the honeymoon. Bummer Smiley sad But better than getting flagged!

I’m in the same boat. We had to get married months ahead of time and change my name so that our new house paperwork was all in the new name. I booked the honeymoon before we had any plans of getting married earlier so my tickets are in my maiden name. My travel agent assured me that as long as my passport matches my tickets I shouldn’t have an issue but part of me is still worried they’ll turn me away haha. Would love to hear from others their experience.

I had a friend who planned to go on her honeymoon 4 months after they got married, so theoretically, plenty of time to change her name. Well the passport people messed it up and they ended up having to pay a lot more to get it expedited and almost had to push their trip back. I would say, just to be extra safe vs sorry, I would just wait until after your trip. And it's true that your name on your passport needs to match exactly the name on the tickets.

I would suggest not changing your DL either until you get back. Many TSA agents can be stingy when it comes to checking your boarding pass and DL.

Save yourself any possible headache and wait until you get back from your honeymoon to start the name change process.

Save yourself the headache! Either change EVERYTHING or change NOTHING until you get back. Having two different names on different forms of ID can get to be a PAIN. TSA absolutely will give you a hard time (a friend of mine is a former TSA agent and has backed me up on this). Just wait it out. Though a month may seem like long enough to get everything done - better safe than sorry!

I would just wait until after your honeymoon. You can still use your new name socially, but that gives you more time to get your new SS card and drivers license

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the feedback. That was my initial instinct as well (to wait) but of course I'd love to see my name on SOMETHING. I'll definitely just wait it out and do it in a couple of months.
