Name change services?

FutureStephD, on January 30, 2019 at 10:18 PM Posted in Married Life 0 7
For those that did or are planning to change their last name after getting married, do you have any opinions on name changing services like MissNowMrs.com or HitchSwitch? It sounds like a cool easy service, but my concern would be the potential for identity theft and if it really changes your name effectively across everything.

Any insights appreciated!

thanks,
Steph

I haven’t used it but from what I’ve gathered those services don’t actually change your name, just send you the forms which you can get for free on the internet or at government offices.

Ahh, you’re right! I started doing more research and it looks like for $30 they send you forms. For $60-80 they’ll fill out your forms. But you still have to add info bc they won’t take “sensitive” information like your social security number. Then you still have to file the paperwork and etc 🙄

    Thanks for the response!

No worries! Yeah I don’t think it’s worth it to pay that much just to have them to fill in your address and name and stuff. You still have to go stand in line at social security. But they have good marketing and seem to make a lot of money off brides who don’t look too much into it haha.

I just started the process of changing mine and it is SO easy! There haven’t even been forms to fill out besides the typical ones at the DMV when you renew. I Went immediately after school one afternoon and got there right before close in an hr I was done with social
security and the DMV. If you could leave work a little early and go at the end of the day that might work for you as well.

    Thanks for the feedback!

I honestly think the "hardest" part of changing my last name will be work related!... changing log-ins, emails, benefits, etc etc. But I'm sure it will be fine and work out.

I thought the name change process was going to be SUCH a hassle but it has been cake and I’m “weird” and dropped my middle name instead of my maiden. I just checked with every place for what I needed to change my name ahead of time and made appts to have everything updated. Even my credit cards and mortgage were super easy to update!

It is not hard without a service, free or low cost, as when you want a current license reissued with a new name . And these services either bounce forms back to you to add sensitive info, or you still have to release enough to make identity theft easy. Meanwhile, you still have to do lots or things for yourself. Changing your name with DMV and store credit cards, for example, may mean they change your name for billing. But these services do not order new cards, or new licenses, unless your expiration date is more than a year away. So all the hassle stuff, you have to do. Save your money, and keep as much security as you can. Any place with enough identifiers, can find enough on other data bases that sell lists, like insurance companies, to complete identity theft. Don't.
