Name change question: driver's license

Yvette, on July 7, 2017 at 2:42 AM Posted in Married Life 0 19

Edit: Please stop asking me if my vision is too bad to drive. I say in the post i just got renewed. I have type 1 diabetes, I'm shy about vision issues. I get checked once a year by an optometrist. Thank you. Hi guys!

Made it through the wedding alive...will post a BAM tomorrow if I have the energy! Quick questions for you.

When you got your new driver's license, did they make you redo the vision test? These really stress me out (long story), I'm hoping I won't have to retake another one, I just renewed my license a year or two ago so did a vision test recently.

Thanks for any help!

In MA you only need if you are due for a vision test, i think its every other re-renewal.

I went with my friend to get her new ID and she filled out a paper, handed it in to the front desk and the license came in the mail.

What state are you in? That would help us give you a more specific answer!

I didn't say I was concerned about it, I said they stress me out. As a type one diabetic, vision is a bit of an embarrassing topic for me.

    Thanks!

I am not stressed out because I think I'll fail. I'm stressed out because vision tests are embarrassing to me.

    Thank you for the help.

No, normally they don't make you re-take any part of the test. If you just got it renewed recently you can file the paperwork and just bring your marriage certificate to the DMV. It is just like changing your address except you need the certificate to verify your new name.

ETA: This is the policy in Texas. Not sure if it applies to you.

Lol in NC you don't get vision tested again, even when it's time for renewal. That explains a lot...

I'm in Georgia and it was time for my renewal. I didn't take a vision test but I'm not sure what the rules around that is.

I'm in Texas and changed my name on my drivers license last month and did not have to do a vision test.

I'm in ND and I had to update a license they didn't even snap a new picture. Filled out the paper paid the fee got handed a new license.

This was for an address change but I'm assuming you won't have too until the expiration date.

I'm in MA and when I went to transition my license from PA to MA they made me do a quick vision test.

When I changed my license from DE to AZ, they did not make me do a new vision test. I figured I would have to and was surprised when they told me I was done. I asked if I needed to do a vision test because I had not done it that day, yet. I was told it was not needed because my old license from DE was still valid when I came in so my passing of the vision test transferred over from that license. They would only do a vision test if I was renewing an expired license.

Considering AZ licenses don't expire until age 65, I feel like they should take all opportunities to do a vision test, such as when people come in from a different state. Oh well.

Do most states require a vision test? I've lived in both DE and PA and I definitely don't remember ever having to take a vision test.

I didn't need one when I got my new ID. I did have to take a new photo which really bummed me out because my last one was fabulous.

    ETA I'm in CA

I stress out about this too!! They made me do a vision test without my glasses when I got my license renewed last time. And they had to switch the "starting line" four times because the only letters I could read were the biggest letters. I felt so embarrassed... but I guess it's necessary to indicate that this driver needs glasses or contacts to be driving! I feel for you! Let us know what happens!

In PA I didn't need to redo a vision test. All they wanted was my check, marriage license, and old ID.

I'm in WA too!! You only have to take the test when you renew, not to change any of the info. The only thing you have to do is get a new picture. Smiley smile
