Name Change on Social Security Cards?

Sharon, on June 1, 2020 at 1:48 PM Posted in Married Life 1 10

Hi, so we got married on April 4, 2020 and I have yet to change my name on my SSC. I heard that you can mail in your information. I'm really skeptical about mailing in my marriage certificate. So has anyone been successful with mailing in their information????

You could request certified copies of your marriage certificate that way you won't have to worry about sending in the only original copy you have!

I mailed all my stuff in for my SS card and got everything back and my new card a little over a week later. Didn't have any problems at all! Much easier than I thought it would be.

I live in Louisiana and the only thing I’m scared about it mailing in my drivers license but I haven’t change my name either how long do we have before they charge you to change your name.

I just sent in my original marriage certificate and the application. They won't take copies, it has to be originals. I didn't have to send my license or SS card since my marriage certificate had my date of birth on it. But I'm in TN so I'm not sure every state is like that. But I called first to make sure what all they needed and just did what he told me. It was mailed back to me a couple days before I got my new card.

I sent everything in and got my stuff back shortly after, but never received my card and it's well past the two week timeframe for receiving it... SS office is basically like, "I don't know, it was processed on Sept. 9th. If you don't receive it just resend your stuff." Super unhappy about this because is a card just floating around out there somewhere? If I reprocess and get a new one, will there be two that exist? I was very hopeful because everyone was saying it was a smooth process, so just beware.. it's different for everyone.

First off, you shouldn’t have to resend your stuff. Everything is already in the system. I would check the post office to see if it’s there and if not jut have them send you another one.
