Name Change - mva

Liz, on November 12, 2020 at 11:56 AM Posted in Married Life 0 8

So I recently got married and started the process of changing my last name. I've sent out the stuff for a new SSN card. I know after that you can go to the MVA to get a new license. Can anyone tell me what they normally require you to bring when you get your license?

It depends on the state, you will need to call to get specific details for your state.

In my state, I had to bring a copy of my marriage license, my new SS card, and my current drivers license.

It differs from state to state. I live in SC and for me I had to take my marriage license (I took the original and a certified copy in case they needed to keep one; which they did not), the copy of the letter from the Social Security Office stating I legally changed my name through them (I was able to get my name changed on my license before I got my new card b/c I had the letter), 2 pieces of mail to show my proof of residency, my old Social Security Card and my birth certificate. All they really looked at for me was the letter from the SSA and my Marriage License. I was glad I had everything else though b/c with my luck, if I didn't have it, they would've asked for it.

This is going to vary by state. If you go to your state's MVA website, it should tell you what you need. NJ is famous for their "6 points" of ID, so you have to bring everything but the kitchen sink as proof of identity and address.

You should just need the certified marriage certificate. I've moved states when I got married and am attempting to do all of that at one time, so I'm pretty sure I need more documentation that normal.

It definitely depends on your state. I would say the new SSA card, marriage certificate and your current drivers license should do

Your marriage license, social security card, possibly birth certificate.
