Name change - current situation

Ashlee , on March 29, 2020 at 5:15 PM Posted in Married Life 0 9
Has anyone gone through getting their name changed with the social security offices being shut down? I have to mail in my application but I am trying to figure out everything I need to send in with it. Help?! I’ve tried calling and looking on their website but I want to be completely sure that I have everything.

It all depends on your state. Most states require you to marry your original marriage certificate in with the application and they’ll mail it back to you after they make the change.

Copy of drivers license as long as that has been changed already. That should be done after social security card is updated.

So I still need to change my name and I’m waiting until things open. Right now our social security office and dmv are closed as well as a lot of the bank branches to change debit and credit cards. It just feels like it’s not an essential service or priority at this time.

I didn’t mail mine, but I had to have a certified copy of my marriage license and my current ID, plus the paperwork all filled out. I’m in NC and they have an entire section in the SS website about what is needed for your name change.

Did they accept the copies of your passport and license? I'm also in VA and trying to figure it out, as well.

Hey there! They seemed to- they said it could take up to 60 days to receive my new SS card though.
