Most Efficient Name Change Process

Leandra, on July 10, 2017 at 5:01 PM Posted in Married Life 0 9

Hi ladies! Does anyone have advice on the most efficient way to change your last name? I've come across some name change service websites and I'm wondering if they're actually worth it or not. Thanks in advance!

I was told to take our marriage license down to the social security office. I live in Georgia so I'm not sure if where u are is the same way. Congratulations btw. We got married on the same day.

There is no shortcut. The only thing those "services" do is send you the forms that you can get yourself for free. Everything has to be filed by you anyway.

Yeah, just do it yourself. You have to go in person to the DMV and SS and for your passport so paying a company is useless.

It's really not hard, definitely not worth using a service IMO. And Elphaba is right, many places require that you go in person anyway instead of getting the info from some random 3rd party service.

I've already started the process and have a game plan of how I want to do it. I went to the Social Security office with my marriage license and they're sending me a new SS card. Once I get that I can take it and my marriage license and current Driver's License to the DMV and have my ID changed. Then from there you can kind of just do everything else as it comes up. My employer is printing marketing materials with my new name and email address so I'll get it updated with them first, then I'll do my bank accounts, credit accounts, cell phone, etc.

I did it all (minus my passport and work) in two days.

Take your original or certified copy marriage certificate to the SSA with the SS-5 form filed out first. They'll give you a receipt stating that your new card is on the way. You can go to the DMV the following business day. In FL you need to bring your old license, old SS card, receipt from the SSA, marriage certificate, and 2 proofs of address. Immediately after the DMV, I went to the bank and changed my name there. They gave me new debit cards right then.

For your passport, you have to send in a form, your old passport, a new picture, and your marriage certificate.

My job needs my new SS card before they can change my name so I have to wait for that to come in.

Also, if you're a teacher, you have to submit a name change for your certificate before you can change anything at work. Luckily enough, the parish I'm working in this year agreed to let me use my married name for my email since everything else is in the works and it will cause less confusion.

@Bo - not necessarily true. I teach and my district only requires me to change my name with them. I don't have to change my certification when it's up for renewal.

You need to take your marriage certificate to your local SS office, and you should get your new card within a week. From there you'll need to take your marriage certificate & new ss card to the DMV to get an update card or new license. Once you have those you can change everything else.
