Marriage License

Valerie, on November 11, 2020 at 8:03 PM Posted in Married Life 0 5
I’m trying to decide whether to hyphenate my last name with future husband or simply leave a space between the two names. Has anyone applied for a marriage license in Miami? Did you have to write on the license what you plan your new name to be? Or did it simply ask for your current name, thereby giving you some more time to decide on the name change?

When you apply, you write your current legal name.

I am a widow remarried and although I moved in with my new hubby to his home, I kept me and late hubby martial home which are both and late hubby name. When I updated my name i didn't hypen, I became first name late hubby last name and new last name and write it as Peggy brown smith, sign as Peggy b. Smith. This helped because I didn't want to go thru changing everything... mortgage, debit cards, veterans id card, vehicles and such. DL and SS card spells it out as Peggy brown smith so for the most part my name stays the same and I answer rather ppl address me as Ms. Brown or Ms. Smith and new hubby is ok with it. For what it's worth, new hubby is a widower and a few things like his mortgage and electric bill still has his late wife's name included, so we figure why fix something that isn't broken. But your situation maybe different, but I've had no problems whatsoever.

Thank you for sharing! I have also considered using both of our last names without the hyphen. I’m trying to make the process easy.

Check with the county where you're getting married but I know many places you write yourself current name when applying for the license and change it with SSA
