Marriage License - Processing time?

Sylphier, on July 6, 2017 at 1:52 PM Posted in Married Life 0 17

So I got married on June 17th of this year and my marriage license was signed and sent back to the court on the 19th. I can't find anything on our local county website about how long the processing time is for the license before I can get certified copies, and was just wondering about how long it took everyone else to get their license processed?

I have tried looking up the license but our county website seems to have a broken search engine because I fill all the info out and the search button still does not let me click it. So, no way for me to know without calling or the copy turning up in the mail. I wouldn't be too concerned about this except for two things - my drivers license expires this month and when I renew I would prefer to change my name then, rather than have to pay again so soon after renewal. Also, I lost my health coverage in April and since I would be able to go on DH's when we married, I didn't try to find new coverage but we need a copy of the license for that too.

Ours took 3 weeks. :-/ Also, remember that you have to change your name with SS before you can change it with the DOL.

This makes me hope we should get ours soon then - though the office was closed the 3rd and 4th because of the holiday maybe it will come. My license is due the 17th so if its not here by monday I think I might call to check on it.

@Samantha I know - I am currently out of work, so I can go any time once my license is in hand and plan to do it asap. So long as it shows up before the 15th, I should be alright.

    Ours took 4 weeks.

Our county office also wouldn't tell you if it was available over the phone.

I had a friend get married in another county, but same state, and got hers back in 10 days. So it depends on the county.

We had a hold mail in place while we were on our two week honeymoon and really expected it to be in the mail we picked up when we came home, but it wasn't.

Call. You said there's no way for you to know without calling or it showing up in the mail. A quick call should clear this up quickly. Since you're trying to get on his health insurance and you're limited in the time you have to process this as a qualifying life event, I wouldn't just wait around.

Put on your big girl panties and call the office where you submitted them.

I plan to call by monday if it doesn't show up, which gives me still enough time for my license and we still have about a month for the health insurance paperwork [I am just due for standard check ups and would like to do this sooner rather than later] - it sounds like the license should turn up fairly soon but if not, I will call monday to check the status.

    Thanks everyone Smiley laugh

Your officiant might know the answer to this! Mine did.

    Every state is different.

Find out where your officiant submitted it and call them. Some offices don't automatically mail them; you have to request them.

Also, go by there since you aren't working. Most of the counties I know about won't give the information over the phone - it had to be in person.

@Celia My officiant submitted it to the same office we picked the license up from, through the usps with the pre-addressed envelope they provided with the license. I was there when he mailed it. And I was also told we would get 1 certified copy once the license was processed and additional ones were $10 on request and there would be a form to order sent as well. So, I would hope they have it by now at least.

@Bo Leigh our office is in the middle of the city with no parking/a bad area to walk alone in and they dont allow you to carry even turned off cell phones into the building so I don't go alone there, ever, or I would go in to check. DH is going to take a day off work to go pick up the extra licenses with me when it is processed.

@Sylphier Is there no one else who could run by there with you? I ask because both of our insurances had a 30 day window to add coverage of a spouse.

Hopefully it will be there for you on Monday.

@Bo Leigh, not really no. Aside from needing someone to go there with me, for my peace of mind, I also need someone to watch my 6 year old or take him with me [and I dont want to take him with]. MiL/FiL work very busy retail schedules and my only family nearby works all the hours the office is open also. I only have 3 local friends, all of which also have young children who would need cared for and no one to leave them with during the day. DH made sure with his company that we would be able to file no matter when the license came, so I'm not too too worried.
