Legally married end of June, is it possible?

Martha, on June 3, 2020 at 4:32 PM Posted in Illinois Planning 0 22

IL brides,

Unfortunately my wedding get postponed to June 26, 2021. But I still would like to get legally married this June 26 this year so next year will be church ceremony and party. My questions are there anyone obtaining their marriage license yet? And if yes, how? I dont think the clerk office open yet. Also if you already get the marriage license, are you planning to get married at the court or hire an officiant?

This situation makes me so disappointed and I really hope I won't have to change my plan again. I finally come to term with having it postpone to next year as long as I can still legally married this year. I dont know what to do

Illinois bride here! Our original date was July 17, 2020, but we pushed it back to April 25, 2021. We're still planning on getting married in my parents backyard with just immediate family. My sisters boyfriend who is ordained is going to marry us. Which county are you in? Cook County was allowing online applications. I applied a couple weeks ago, but have not heard back yet. If we don't get a license by the time our date rolls around, we're still going to get married and just deal with the license later (a coworker of mine did the same thing). I feel like all the rules and traditions are out the window at this point so why not make it how you want it!

I'm part of cook county. I did applied back in May but when I went to clerk office, they were closed so now the application has expired. Have you go to clerk county and pick up the license?

The website said the application will be expired in 2 weeks if you don't come and meet with the clerk officer. Also you will need the license to get it legally married with any officiants. I think...

I'm in Will County and we were supposed to get married at our church in Cook County. We looked into getting our marriage license in Cook, but they seemed to have some restrictions, so we gave up (that was in April/early May) However, the Will County Clerk is open. We found out about a week before our original date and hurried to get a license. The court is still performing marriages 6 days a week as well. I don't believe you need to live in Will County to get a license, as long as your marriage happens in Will County. I'll put the link below, if you're interested. They may have changed some things since we've been moved into stage 3, but they were only taking appointments on Mondays and Tuesdays to get a license. Good luck!!

Good news. My marriage license get approved and we have an online appointment soon. I think my plan for legal wedding by June 26 is possible after all... I'm so happy. Now I just need to find out if the city hall will open on that day. If not I'll need to find an officiant

    Hi Martha,

As an attorney in Chicago who is in City Hall quite frequently, my guess is that it won't be open until the Daley Center opens which is scheduled for July 6th right now. I am sure you will get your license in time but I would try to find someone who is ordained or an officiant. I believe there are some working! We are in the same situation and having our pastor do it on June 27th.

    Good luck!!

    Hi Jamie,

Yes i just find out the court won't perform marriage ceremony until July 6th. It turns out my dad had license to ordained wedding before and he agreed to get his license renewed so he can marry us.

Do you have any suggestions for couples looking to apply? How was the application process? I’m hoping to celebrate a small ceremony in the beginning of July but starting the application process a little late as my FH was busy studying for and taking a major exam out of state but is back now.

    Hi Theresa,

I applied for marriage license at Cook Clerk County in May, but then few weeks later we also apply for the priority marriage license since it was closed to our wedding date and we still did not heard any respond. We emailed a bunch of people: Marriage.Online at cookcountyil.gov, clerk.yarbrough at cookcountyil.gov, and vital.records at cookcountyil.gov and finally within a week or two, our marriage license was approved and scheduled for zoom meeting to complete the process. We are scheduled for June 25th, a day before our wedding date which is perfect.

I believe the Cook County Court will be open July 6th if you plan on getting married in Court. You could also go to another county or another state and applied the license there (the only thing is you will also need to get married at the same county or state where your license was issued)

    Good luck Theresa,

Hi Martha, we actually just got scheduled for our appointment for June 26th since were getting married on the 27th! Have you heard anything from other brides regarding how long it took or anything? Ours is scheduled for between 1 and 2pm and my fiancé has to work so I’m going to go meet him at work but we have no idea how long it will take? Any info is appreciated!

Congrats, that's awesome. Mine is scheduled for tomorrow at 10AM so I dont know how long it will take yet. I am taking a day off so I can get this done. I can let you know tomorrow how long mine was.

Make sure you bring some forms of identification and have printer nearby because I believe they will send us a form that we have to sign, then we have to scan it back before they can send us the license via email.

Hi! I am also waiting on approval/marriage license for a July 3rd celebration. When did you hear about/schedule your appointment time? Just trying to figure out if I need to be more patient or if I should reach out to the county offices. Thanks!

Hi Theresa, I applied for mine back in May and after few weeks not hearing anything back, I applied for Priority Marriage License and kept on calling Clerk Office. Within less than week (I think), they send me an email with schedule appointment tomorrow, a day before my legal wedding ceremony. We were approved on June 4th (3 weeks ago).

Jamie, the whole thing take 30 min or less.
First, They call you on the phone (you will stay on the line the whole time), then they ask you to join zoom meeting (if you dont have zoom account, you might need to create one), they will ask you both to hold your ID to the camera while he verified. Then they will email you the form and license. You both will sign the form, and scan it back to them. Once they received the email, they will briefly tell you your next steps and you are done.

    I hope this helps.
