Last Name Transition

FutureMrsR, on July 23, 2017 at 1:10 PM Posted in Married Life 0 16

If you're changing your last name after your wedding, how did you transition from your maiden name to your new last name? I mean especially in professional settings. I was thinking to just change my email signature like so: if my maiden name was Jane Smith, I'd make my signature Jane (Smith) Doe for a few months, and then Jane Doe once everyone realized I'd gotten married.

I really liked that idea, and I planned on simply letting people know in person as needed, but maybe it'd be better to just make it a clean break and switch it altogether immediately? I don't plan on keeping my maiden last name a part of my full name at all.

Also -- does anyone feel kind of guilty having the company print new business cards for your new name? Maybe I shouldn't, but I'll only have worked there 10 months when I get married. I'm probably just overthinking it!

TIA!

For my first wedding I started in my email signature a few weeks before effective x date my new email address will be. Then I kept both email addresses for awhile but had an auto response on the old one this has been changed. My company had no problems printing everything over. But I work for a smaller company. I'll do the same thing again.

@Tricia: My company is small too; I think that's why I feel bad! Every penny counts, LOL! I still have 10 months on this card, though. I'm lucky that my actual email address won't change, it's like ****@***********.*** -- no mention of my last name!

I'm a teacher and started in a new district, and I also feel bad and I'm hoping I catch them before they print everything with my soon-to-be maiden name on it. I had to contact HR though and also one the head of the office for the building I'm in. I was introduced to everyone as my current name, but I think everyone will figure it out shortly. I'll just inform them I was married over the summer.

I'm also a teacher. I started by introducing myself to all new parents/students by my new name. As soon as my social card came in the mail, I notified my district and got my email, name tag, etc. changed. Don't feel guilty about it. People get married and change their name all the time.

I work for a large company for 2 years now. I have 3 different emails from them (yes I know it's a lot of email accounts) my IT team is going to assist in switching everything over to my new last name, but they informed me it will take time. FH is okay with me using my last name for a little but just for work purposes.

I think I will be doing this. It makes sense as I'm professionally known this way but quite a few business partners.

Not me, but I am aware of what some others have done. Where I worked, if the person was changing their name legally, we required proof to change HR records. Email signatures and business cards and the like were optional for the person. I know one lady that got married and changed her name to her husband's did as the OP indicated.

I like you idea of just putting your maiden name in parenthesis for a few months.

College prof here. I switched teaching positions over the summer, so I'll introduce myself to all my students and new colleagues as "Dr. NewLastName." My CV has my full name on it (First Middle Maiden Married) and I'll continue to publish under that name as well.

I have started to sign my email:

    New Name

    Formally Old Name

    Student ID

    Phone Number

    Email Address

At school. At my job I only email my manager and she knows my name, so it's not an issue.

Thanks for the reminder! I hadn't thought about changing it professionally other than I know they won't give me a new email address (it's first initial full last name @work .com).

I'm a teacher too so I guess I'll have to see about them giving me a new ID and such with my new last name on it!

So much work! I'm excited to take his last name, but also dreading the process of doing so

I work at a charter school as a teacher. We just got school emails, we were using gmail as an all school communication and it is our first initial and last name. I really hope they can change it, they said they would.

Also, at my school we go by our first names to parents and students. I'm not sure why but all of us do. One of my students who moved into my classroom recently came from the other Miss Colleen and now I'm changing my last name, his parents probably won't know what happened.

It's so cool how many of you are teachers! I had lots of teachers change names during school and was never confused, so I'm sure you guys will be fine!

I'm also trying to decide how to denote it in the newspaper I work for (I'm a reporter). I thought about doing the same thing in the paper, since I won't even have been in the area a year by the time I change my name so I won't lose a huge decades-long track record or anything, or maybe I'll just start using both.

I'm a notary public and I sign a lot of affidavits/documents for my job. I kept my maiden name at my job until I received my new notary commission with my married name. I found that changing my signature to be an easy transition, since I sign my new name close to 100 times a day.
