Hello🙋🏻‍♀️

Have you changed your last name yet? It has been 6 months since my wedding and I dont start the process. Where do you start?

You start with the social security office. From there, you can change driver's license (and passport if you have one), then everything else. I would probably hold off a bit more given all of the closures. I don't think the social security office is even open, depending on your state.

If you did sign your new name on your marriage certificate, though, it is now your legal name. So even though you have not yet got through to DMV or Social Security, if you get a loan, sign up for benefits, whatever, use your new name. And write former name in brackets, either
Jane Marie ( Addison) Smith, or Jane Marie Smith ( né Addison). So people can match the old and new you. And carry your marriage certificate.

As Hannah stated, you will start by going to the Social Security Administration to change your name. Make sure you bring a certified copy of your marriage license (that is what was required in my state). After that, it takes about 24 hours to update electronically, and about 1 week to receive your new SS card. You can then get a new drivers license, passport, change banking information, etc.
