issues deposting checks before name change?

LilBit, on April 17, 2017 at 11:49 AM Posted in Married Life 0 14

We didn't have a joint account before we got married. I don't plan on changing my name until after the honeymoon (next month). All of our checks are made out to Hisfirstname & Myfirstname Hislast name.

I'm sure we are not the first ones to deal with this.

I don't mind waiting to deposit until after name change --- but it seems risky if something happens to the checks prior and possibly an inconvenience for our family who will have that check "out there" for so long.

Contact your bank to be sure. The bank I used to work for would reject deposits made out to a different name than what was on the account.

@BadgerBride, did she sign the check over to her H? Or did he just endorse and deposit?

I had this issue with a check on Friday. We don't have a joint account. FH signed the back of the check. I went to my credit union and they wouldn't deposit it without him present with ID. Luckily I also have an account where the check was drawn on (Citizens) and they were able to deposit it but not cash it. I'm really hoping after the big day our friends and family pick one person to write things to since most of them have been through this!

@ OG Alecia -- I know, I think people are excited to write a check out to the new Mr & Mrs but it is really a pain.

With all the wedding advice out there --- there should be some guidance to guests who choose to write checks. Makes me appreciate those visa gift cards a LOT Smiley smile

I work at a bank. We don't accept checks until we have proof of the name change.

You can always contact the one who have it to you and ask if it's okay that you wait (most expect a wait time) or if they weren't, if they could reissue it to you guys with your current names.

I went to the bank with DH, my current ids (hadn't changed my name yet), and the original copy of our marriage license so we were able to deposit the checks! Banks are used to this happening, and will let you know what they need from you!

Susan & Brea: Are checks that get deposited via an ATM given the same level of scrutiny? Would the computer pick up that the names don't exactly match?

If it says "AND" on the check, both of you have to sign it. Most of the checks we got were just made out to me (in my old name), so we didn't have this issue. The other day, my dad wrote me a check in my new name (not wedding related) because he didn't realize that I haven't changed it on my bank account yet. I brought it to the bank and showed them my driver's license, which does have my new name on it, and I didn't have any issues.

Most of our checks were addressed this way and we had no problem. I'm with chase bank and I just went in and brought in my marriage license and I believe I signed "first name maiden name" and then underneath signed "first name his last name" and I could deposit it into my account !

I just deposited a check made out to Mr. & Mrs. Fiance's Name, in to our joint checking, via the mobile app, and I signed it.. didn't even think twice about it. Whoops. But it went through and was processed without a problem.

My husband deposited the checks from his phone since it's the same last night on his bank account. He had no issues. I never tried to deposit checks into my account.

My bank told me they would make note that I was changing my name because I am getting married and if he endorses the checks over to me on the back of each one I can sign them and deposit them in my bank account after the wedding since it formally needs to be changed after my marriage license comes in and then with the driver license and social security card
