How soon do people start buying gifts?

Some people buy it soon and some don't. I don't think it hurts if you put it on there and if by x amount of time when you need it by it isn't purchased yet then take it off and buy it yourself.

We started receiving gifts 10 months before the wedding but it might depend on your guests. On your registries you can see who has purchased what so far.

It's a huge range. I've bought gifts 5 months in advance, and I've bought gifts between the ceremony and reception and wrapped them in a store parking lot...

We got a notification when something was bought off of our Amazon registry.

We just moved in together so we require that we buy a few things off our registry. Our bed is getting delivered next week, so I absolutely bought a sheet and bedding set. I just had to. We also needed flatware. So we picked that up too.

I got my first gift six months out, mainly because I have a shower coming up

As stated, it just depends on your guest. My wedding is just over 3 months out, the first of two shower is in two weeks and we haven't received anything. Which it totally okay! I'll just be happy if people show up to any of our festivities.

I started getting gifts as soon as my save the dates went out. I’d recommend registering with Zola. They let you mark certain items as “most wanted” and those items were quickly purchased for us.

As others have said, you can track your registry directly through more of the stores/websites. People started buying gifts as soon as the shower invites went out.

Also, unless absolutely necessary, I would wait until after the wedding date to purchase any remaining items on your registries. Pretty much every registry gives you a completion discount (usually 10%-20% off) on any items remaining on your registry that you want to purchase after your wedding date. May as well save some cash unless you absolutely need the item at that moment.

Yeah that's smart! I'm thinking it'll all start when we get our invites sent out. I'll have to keep an eye on the registry

We got a few gifts right when our invites went out (3 months in advance). Then I got shower gifts, and now we are getting wedding gifts (about 1 month out). We track our gifts on Amazon.

My STD have been out for 2 months and nobody has bought anything off my two registries. When is your shower? My shower isn't until August. You should get a feel of what was bought once the shower comes up and you can track it.
