Household Duplicate Donations

Helen, on February 10, 2022 at 6:42 PM Posted in Registry 0 5

Hey,

My fiancee and I are both in 30's and have lived alone for quite some time. Inbetween asking for some newer things on our registry, we also just have a lot of the same things. Does anyone know of an organization that you can donate these kitchen/homegood items to that they can be used by someone in need? Either a poor college student or single person living by themselves etc? I have really nice Correll plates that I purchased in 2010, that have stood the test of time, through I would say about 12-15 moves, and not a single piece is chipped. I have really cute (pink) cookware, that my fiancee is insisting must go, that sort of thing, but I would really love to know it went to someone who really needs it without them having to piecemeal and pay for it through good will.

Thanks!!!

Usually you can call up the Gifts In Kind supervisor at a local homeless shelter and they can direct you to a facility in their employment where people are collecting housewares for a new apartment. You can do the same at a local university.

The other option is to donate to an upscale thrift store that is run by a house of worship/hospital/charities such as Humane Society. A thrift store such as Deseret Industries has better quality items in a clean store than Goodwill or Value Village.

You can also reach out to your local partner violence shelter. Often times, they have families who fled abusive homes and are then transitioning from the safe house to their 1st new place without any housewares.

If you live near to a college/university you may be able to post on a bulletin board or something a list of things you want to give away. You could also do facebook marketplace and list stuff as free.

I echo what Hannah said. I'm in the LA area and I donate frequently to the Battered Women's Shelter here, which takes everything - kitchen, clothes, decorations, craft supplies... literally everything in any condition. They help people who have been victims of domestic violence set up new homes and they need all kinds of things to help with that. They are a great organization and I'm sure there's one near you too! Often times, they will come to you and do a pick up!

You could also check out Habitat for Humanity which helps people get into homes. I've done large items with them (sofas, fridges etc) but I'm sure they need all kinds of stuff!

Join your local Buy Nothing group on Facebook and try giving them away there.
