Gift Cards?

Valerie, on October 20, 2020 at 3:59 PM Posted in Registry 1 11
My fiancé and I have been living in our own places for years. Once we are married and I move in with him, we are looking at 2 of everything. For this reason, we haven’t started a registry. Many guests are asking for one. Has anyone ever simply requested gift cards to their favorite places (Home Depot, Target, Bed Bath and Beyond)?

Yes!! We did amazon, Walmart, and bed bath and beyond. We added a few things to each to update things around the house. But at those locations you can request gift cards on your registry. Which ended up being what we got from everyone.

How did you word it in your invitation? I don’t want to offend anyone.

This information shouldn't go on the invitation. Registry/gift information never goes on your invites. Registries normally go on wedding websites. My husband and I lived together for yours as well, but we asked for updated items like new towels and dishes. You could also ask for things you might not ordinarily purchase for yourself.

We worded it as normal that we were register at these places, but when our guests looked our registries up at Amazon, Bed Bath Beyond, Etc. it showed “gift card” at the top. You can always just word your invitations as “Gift cards and gifts are welcome from (target, Walmart,) but not necessary” or something like that. I don’t think it’ll be rude. Gift cards are so much easier on people especially during these times.. the less going out the better.

Good point! We are not putting it on our wedding invitations, but our coworkers are hosting a wedding shower for us so they are the ones looking to add it to that invitation.

We’ve been living together for years too. When asked, I’ve just said we’re just doing a honeymoon fund.

For those who like to pick out a gift, you may want to end up with full sets of towels in greater numbers than you have to match his bathroom, kitchen, more sheets and blankets than he has that go with the room color. Your guy may be different. But I have never moved in with anyone where we have not had either towels in peach or shades of lavender ( mine) with his rust and orange, or a total number that look okay in the bathroom we ended up in, always too little. Towels, bathmats, Bathsheets if you have hips and his bath towels don't fit, or he uses only one towel but you use one for your hair and a bathsheet for your body, enough to go 10 days without doing laundry. Take an inventory, if you haven't. We got a huge number of things off registry that we never thought of, and really appreciated. picnic table, patio set, beach umbrellas, double wide and single hammocks we always travel in the car and camp with, large battery op LED lanterns for power failures, big enough that make a large part of the yard useable for night time gatherings. If storage is limited in a small space, it is often good to part with 1/3 -2/3 of your odds and ends for a unified set, or cooking bowls and pans and storage containers that nest together. FI and I got engaged as we were moving together, and I swear we had 6 of everything, but somehow when we looked at stuff, 1/3 about got pitched, or towels for people went for cars and dogs. And we were missing all kinds of stuff, happy not to spend $500 on filling in type shopping.

Plenty of people request gift cards!! No problem with doing that! We have lived together for years and our registry items are simply upgrades from what we have. You can also register with Zola and have a cash fund registry instead of a gift registry. Guests can contribute whatever amount they want. You can also split the cash fun up for different purposes. My future SIL had their honeymoon fund split into: airplane tickets, resort accommodations, honeymoon activities.

We have been living together for 2 years surviving on my leftover stuff I complied from college and High school graduation gifts lol. So we registered for upgrades and matching sets as well as gift cards. We are 37 days away and not one single gift has been purchased. So I can't speak from experience but I would register for gift cards vs nothing!
