Engagement photos

What are your opinions on engagement photos? We are going to be paying for everything ourselves so we're not sure if going for a photographer that costs over $1000 is worth it. Or going with friends who kind of have their own thing on the side and do a pretty good job with everything.
For the actual wedding we're definitely going to get a more expensive photographer but I wasn't sure about engagement pictures. Thoughts?

It’s definitely a personal preference and everyone has different priorities. But for us I’m so glad we did engagement pictures with our wedding photographer because we were able to get more comfortable with her and how she shoots and likes us to pose. It made things go much more smoothly on our wedding day.

Some photographers throw in an engagement session with your wedding package, especially the ones who work for themselves.

Yikes, $1K seems high. We weren’t going to take them but my hubby found a $50 Groupon deal with a new photographer. We only planned to use for our Save The Dates and wedding website so paying a few hundred dollars didn’t make sense to us... we put that money towards our wedding!

Look it up on Groupon in your area. If you can’t find a good deal than I say save some money and ask a friend to take some pictures at your favorite location.

1K seems way too expensive for engagement pics... I found a Groupon deal for $80 for a 1.5 session and we got about 55pics.. I wouldn’t have paid more than $100.

We planned on doing one for the sake of the Save the Dates and website, plus we don't really have any just nice pictures together, but I'm super glad I clicked on this thread bc I wouldn't have thought to check Groupon!

I say for Engagement photography look for a college student or one who isn’t that pricy. Unless it’s a part of the package of your photog for the wedding.
ModelMayhem has some stunning people on there- I am a model and work w/a lot of “new” photographers there. And have been pleased with results!
We did an impromptu shoot, as FH HATES his pic taken- unless he’s “Lord Fairfax” at the Maryland Renaissance Festival. And one of the photographers happened to be there that I worked with and so, well these happened:

I used the first one on my StD’s, back of card, and a candid head shot of us in front. Shutterfly is AMAZING! FYI.

It’s definitely up to you! Ours is included in our wedding package, and FH is a little camera shy so I’m hoping that by doing engagement photos it’ll help us be more comfortable in front of the camera on our wedding day. But you can also get nice pics if someone you know has a good camera (or phone honestly lol). Maybe it’s different in my area, but I know you can find packages for engagement pics for only a few hundred dollars. Can you do a short 1hr session that only offers a couple images? That could definitely bring the price down!

I didn't originally want to do them, but it's part of my photography package. The photographer made a valid point that it gives us a chance to get used to working together before the big day. If it wasn't included, I likely wouldn't do them OR I'd go the friend route.

Our photographer is a mutual friend, so we knew we would be comfortable with her. I was against the engagement pictures at first, because we were already engaged 7 months at that point, but they really helped us become used to being in front of a camera.

Her package was reasonably priced and an engagement session was included, so we decided what the heck! lol.

They were included in the photographer's package... otherwise I am unsure if we would have gotten them done. I would look at photographers that offer engagement photos as complimentary if you book with them for your wedding.
