You really only NEED them for Save the Dates/invitations (if you choose to add pictures on those), and for some fun photos of you and your FH before you tied the knot. If you want the pictures for Save the Dates, then consider doing your shoot a month or more BEFORE you send your save the dates (give your photographer time to edit and send you the finished shots). For example, if you sent your STDs 8 months before your wedding (I've heard 6-8 months is the best time for STDs), then I would do a November/October shoot (sometime around there). But if you're doing your shoot outside and you want more of a Springy/Summery feel, then get them done as early as you like. No rules! Smiley smile

I did mine almost exactly a year out. I sent my Save the Dates out 10 months in advance due to accommodation issues.

We did ours a year out about. Sent save the dates about 10 months out.

I would say around the one year mark. That allows for plenty of time for Save the Dates with photos and still "current" pictures if you want to use them for signage or guest books or other things at the wedding.

Our wedding is next October and we got engaged last September, so just a smidge over a two year engagement. We just booked our photographer too and are booking our engagement session for this October. I really want the Fall colors in the pictures since we'll be having a Fall wedding. I also want to make sure we have enough time to get the pictures back for the STDs which we're sending in January.

I dont think you really need a timeline on it. It varies from couple to couple. We did ours about 6 months in because I wanted summer photos and to use the photos for our save the dates.

We had an 11 month engagement and had our engagement photos done 7 months before our wedding.

Our first session was a year out, our second session was 11 months out, and our third will be 4 months before the wedding. We used the photos from the first session for our save the dates, hoping to use our third session photos to enlarge and display somewhere at our wedding.
