Hey Everyone! Recently engaged a few weeks ago! I'm wondering what everyone's thoughts are on engagement photos. We have tons of pictures from the night we were engaged (the maitre d at the restaurant took most) and then a planned family vacation a week later in Cape Cod MA (taken by my sister, mom and random vacationers lol). Should we still think about doing an engagement photo session? Most of these pics have been shared on social media as our announcement. Do we need new ones for our Save The Dates and wedding website? Thoughts?

Congratulations on your engagement!! Professional engagement photos are totally optional, though I highly recommend them for a couple reasons: you get a chance to work with your photographer ahead of your wedding photos (and get an idea of how they pose people, what editing style they use on your photos, and how they work with you), and it's an opportunity to get some beautiful professional photos! Many photographers also include an engagement session in their package when also booking them for wedding photos.

I second Lisa! They were a great way to get a feel for our wedding photographers, it came with our package, and also the quality is fantastic (if you do your research well)! We made Shutterfly albums with ours, prints out of one, and we plan to do a couple more wall prints.

I love your engagement photos already. They are so authentic and some could pass for professional!

I agree with the above posters about the benefits of getting an engagement session. However, I wouldn’t strive to replace the ones you have. They seem so special and meaningful. Your “engagement photo shoot” could be a year out from your wedding, or 3 months out. There’s no timeline. No rules. After you revel in your engagement and when you decide on budget, guest count and venue, it will be time to find a wedding photographer. I think You should make a decision about doing an “engagement photo shoot” at that point!

I didn't get photos done until more than a year after our engagement. I finally decided back in the spring that with the wedding only a few months away I wanted to have pictures that weren't just wedding day photos. Plus it was nice to meet our photographer beforehand and get comfortable with him before wedding day. Depending how soon you want them done, if you decide to wait a bit, it could be nice to book a session with whoever you decide to go with for your wedding to get comfortable around them!

Our photographer includes a short engagement photo session with our photography package. Before you pay extra to have engagement photos taken I would look into photographers you might want to use and see if an engagement session is included. Photos are really a priority to us so we booked our photographer right after we booked our venue even though we are 2 years away yet. We plan on doing our engagement session about a year before our wedding.

Congratulations Allison! We didn’t get engagement photos done but I wish we did. However, we had some nice photos we took that we included on our STD & as our welcome sign.

I second Holly. A lot of photographers that I've seen include engagement sessions. If your top choice doesn't, you could always ask.

You definitely don't have to do them if you don't want to, but I think it's nice to have some good pictures for save-the-dates, your wedding website, etc. when the time comes. We got engaged right before COVID, and had planned to take our engagement pictures in the spring. Cue pandemic, and we didn't even pick back up with planning until early this year. It had been over 2 years since we got engaged by the time we booked our photography team, so we were on the fence about whether we even wanted to do them. We decided to, and I'm really glad we did. It was super helpful getting used to being photographed, and I love having some nicer pictures than our usual selfies or us with our arms around one another by a sign or whatever.

Like others mentioned, it's a good idea to look around, see which photographers' styles you like, and see if whoever you'd want to book for your wedding would be able to do an engagement session.

Another thing to consider is whether you'd want videography. If you do, I'd highly recommend looking for vendors who do both photography and videography. Then they're all on the same "team" and know how to work with/ around one another, plus you're not paying duplicate travel fees, taxes, etc.

Your existing pictures are really nice. They could also be digitally enhanced with tools on personal computers (maybe cell phones too) so the colors will be sharper. You of course could use both the professional engagement pictures and the ones you took.

Thank you so much! Luckily everyone's cell phones have great picture quality! We absolutely love the photos we've gotten so not looking to replace them, but thinking of new ones that don't look so spur of the moment (selfies lol).

Sure. Selfies are a bit cliche for this era but they do get the job done.
