I have an only child which is a daughter and just got engaged. She has some strong ideas for her wedding simple and outdoors. She is 34 and she has been living with her bf for two years. I have always thought I would have a very posh wedding for her, but will not be the case per her decision to keep it rustic and outdoors. The only event that I can plan completely is an engagement party. I would like to have this event evening and cocktail, is there away I could make this very special and not make it pretentious?

How many people do you envision inviting? Can you find a restaurant with a garden where you could also have a 3-piece string group or just a harpist or guitarist? Ask your daughter if she will be willing to this type of event for your sake.
If needed, do this at home or maybe someone has a neighborhood recreation hall for hosting it.

You could look into a local botanical gardens as well. Those spaces can give her the outdoor/natural experience while giving you range on the details to make it posh. Especially if there is a conservatory.
