Engagement Party Advice

Jasmyn, on August 25, 2019 at 1:37 PM Posted in Parties and Events 0 11

Hi guys! So FH and I got engaged back in December of 2017 so were approaching the 2 year mark. We were both just starting careers, moving in together, etc. so a lot of the wedding planning was put on the back burner as we got settled and more comfortable with planning. We are doing a destination wedding on June 19, 2021 so it's a pretty long engagement. At first, we were considering to forego an engagement party because of how much time has passed, but now I'm looking to revisit. A lot of family on my family's side lives in FL and a lot of his family lives in NJ but he also have family in SC so basically we've never had an event where everyone's gotten together and not everyone has met. I think it would be a good opportunity to try and get as many family members to meet before our wedding. My main concern is that it may be passed the "appropriate time" for an engagement party. Thoughts?

Well is not the usual but you make it however works for you. No rules here! I think is a great idea for everyone to get to know each other before the wedding and since you have a destination wedding in June 2021 I say you do this soon so those that have to travel don’t spend much money close to both events.
I had my engagement party a year before my wedding which was also a destination wedding but I only invited locals for the EP since that was the majority of people. Our napkins, Snapchat filter, water bottles and wine labels were save the dates. Just an idea.

We got engaged on March 17th and just had our engagement party on August 11th. Our wedding we are eloping March 21, 2021. I think it just shouldn’t be too close to your actual wedding. We had a pretty fancy party since we are not having a reception post-elopement. People really liked our idea!

Hey Jasmyn! I think that this sounds like a wonderful opportunity to get everyone together before your wedding. It’s also great that you still have quite a bit of time before your wedding so that the expense of traveling will not be condensed into a short time period.

Have you thought about when you would like to have your engagement party?

Where are you having your destination wedding?

Maybe like spring next year? It’ll still be over a year before the wedding and we can give a decent notice. We are getting married in Punta Cana ☺️

I have but FH has not! We’re trying to plan a trip just the two of us for us to see the venue and for him to see Punta Cana

I’ve been in the same boat! Everything I’ve found online for proper engagement party etiquette assumes you’re getting married in a year. Well I got engaged December 2018, & FH and I are getting married March, 2021. So I figured we wouldn’t have an engagement party at all, since that’s so far out. Though we do plan to have a party a year prior to the wedding (March 2020) to announce bridesmaids + groomsmen. It will just be them only though (total of 14 people, if you include FH & I). I’d go for the engagement party if it’s something you truly want! I don’t think the timing matters, as long as it’s the right time for you & FH. My FH & I just have such large family & friend groups, so we figured an engagement party would also be another huge cost we didn’t want to deal with! Not to mention our wedding was being planned far out. I hope you find this helpful! & Good luck with the rest of your wedding planning 🤗💕
