Can someone explain to me the purpose of an engagement party? Do I HAVE to have one?

It's just a celebration about being engaged. No you do not have to have one.

I don’t believe you have to have one. Me and FH had one because when he proposed it was just me and him, so the party was to announce our engagement to our families. I don’t think it’s necessary though.

It is just a way to celebrate your engagement and/or to introduce each other to the other's family and friends if you haven't met yet. These parties should not be hosted by you or your partner, but instead, by someone else who offers to throw one for you. None of the pre-wedding parties are required.

We didn’t have one, but part of me wishes we would have. There are still family members of mine that he hasn’t met, and vice versa. It just would’ve been a nice way to get to know everyone before the big day! But it is totally optional. Almost everything with weddings is optional...remember it’s about the two of you and what YOU want. If you don’t want it, don’t do it.

We had one and loved how it brought both of our families together. We purposely did not invite our friends (outside the wedding party) because we specifically wanted it to be about family. After all, those are the ones showing up to the wedding, no matter what!

We didn't have one; we just went out to a nice dinner with our parents to celebrate.

Basically, someone hosts a party to celebrate your engagement. Definitely not required - we didn't have one and we were totally fine with it!

    We didn't have one.

Well, ok, he proposed at a NYE party, so, technically, we had an engagement party, as in, we got engaged at a party.

We knew we were going to get married in less than a year, so we skipped the engagement party as something that would overburden ourselves and our families.

No you don't, these parties are silly in my opinion - but they are just a party to celebrate that you got engaged.

We had one because my aunt was insistent on throwing one, but I don't think it is necessary. I loved it though because it was a way for our families who don't know each other that well to get together. She set up a wine tasting area, food, and a chocolate fountain and now we have the bottle of wine that she had everyone sign.

Oh and no gifts although my aunt gave us stemless Mr. and Mrs. wine glasses to drink with that night and my FSIL gave us some white picture frames.
