I got engaged 12/1/18 getting married 9/5/20 and my engagement dinner is gonna be on 9/21/19 and I have a few telling me that I’m doing it too soon should I wait a bit longer or no?

We had an engagement dinner party 4/30/19, got engaged 2/18/19, wedding date 9/12/20. I don’t think it’s too early. It’s still about a year from your wedding date, but you’ll have been engaged 9 months already. Every engagement party I’ve been to was within 3-4 months of the engagement.

I always read you don’t throw your own engagement party. It is a party tyst you ask for gifts. So I read some one else has one for you. I have never had one or heard of one being done in the states till this site so I don’t know,

I got engaged on 9/8/18. had our engagement party 12/1/18 and our wedding until 5/30/20, Everyone was super excited so we gave them something to celebrate because they had to wait a long while until our wedding (almost 2 years)... but it's your engagement party & wedding, you go with what you want .

I’m not sure what an engagement dinner is, but if it’s similar to an engagement party, they’re typically 3-4 months after the proposal. I would consider yours pretty late.

To give you some perspective, we got engaged Christmas 2018, did the engagement party in early April 2019 and we aren’t getting married until July 2021! It really doesn’t matter. Do what works for you!

I don't think it REALLY matters but we got engaged 6/7/18, had our engagement dinner in August 2018 (mostly for our families to meet. Only immediate family was invited.) Our wedding date is 10/10/20.
I think the closer to the engagement, the better. But I also think it's cool if you have it 1 year from the wedding like you're planning. Maybe to celebrate like "we're almost there!" or something. I kind of want to throw a party when we are a year away!
Also, you can totally throw yourself an engagement party or dinner. I think the "correct" thing is that you aren't supposed to throw yourself a party where you expect gifts. We did not expect gifts, we did get a few congrats cards though (no money). I organized the dinner myself.
